If we created a taxonomy for the articles and tagged the articles, and then added in a free open source search engine like Lucene, flamenco, Swish-E, etc., that would help to make the site much more user-friendly. Gary and I have tossed this idea around on and off for awhile now, without much coming of it.
For an example of this concept in action, you can visit kb.juniper.net (part of my day job), and see a taxonomy exposed as part of search filters. That uses a KB application from InQuira, but the principle is the same.
If I get a chance to pop into chat tonight, we can discuss more if folks are interested.

I posed something similar, and would be more than happy to help organize a list of links/articles or somesuch, though somebody else will actually have to set up the links on the site.

If so, it is completely possible for me to do. But with the amount of articles we have in the bank, it would literally take me a year to do, and I've surpassed the time when I take on larger projects than I can chew.
Yep, more or less exactly. I know it'd be a big undertaking, that's why it'd be nice if anyone, or almost anyone, could pitch in. Alternatively, if the search engine could generate additional index entries everytime someone ran a search, it'd be self-creating (though someone should probably go through and prune the entries periodically).

Post subject: Article index
Is there any way someone could generate an index of articles by keyword, potentially with the ability to add keywords (or at least index entries) to articles that need them?
The current system of organization is just getting too broad and unwieldy for me. The search feature is nice, but doesn't help if you can't think of the right keyword (ie, deepoerth vs deepearth vs underoerth vs underdark).
A single page with categories and subcategories would be sweet (actually, could we add subcategories to the categories? That might accomplish the same thing.)
