Post subject: Rovers of the Barrens
by William "Giantstomp" Dvorak
The Rovers of the Barrens offers DM’s a wide-open dry steppe for campaigns full of travel and random encounters. The Barrens are bordered by the Fellreev Forest to the south, the Bluff Hills and the Forlorn Forest to the east, the Cold Marshes and Opicm River to the west, and the Barren Wastes to the north. This dry grassland is dotted by Iuzian fortifications such as Grassfort and Fort Shennek manned by Iuzian forces. The Rovers culture is one of hunter-gatherers and wanderers, often associated with Native American culture.
The Gibbering Gate, a prison / insane asylum run by Jumper, one of Iuz’s Greater Boneheart, is found in the Barrens. Information about the Gibbering Gate can be found in WGR5 Iuz the Evil.
Possible inspirations for adventures in the Rovers are the movies, Last of the Mohicans, and A Man Called Horse. Books for inspiration include Eye of Cat by Roger Zelazny and People of the Wolf by Michael Gear.
Country Specific Resources:
???
Adventures in the Country Include:
-Raiding Iuzian forts and supply trains.
-Escorting Rover Tribes to one of their many campsites.
-Escorting wagon trains through the Barrens for private companies or even the Iuzians.
-Infiltrating the Gibbering Gate to free prisoners from imprisonment.
-Hunting down the mythical White Auroch.
Adventures in Nearby areas include:
-Adventures could be hired to thwart slavers from Stonefirst raiding into the Barrens.
-Adventurers can visit the Fellreev Forest to interact with the bandit factions found there, and possibly help with their fight against Iuz.
-Adventurers traveling into the Northern Wastes can visit the mysterious Burning Cliffs and visit remote Rover villages along the coast.
-The Forlorn forest found just to the east of the Barren Wastes, is full of hideous monsters and possibly ancient secrets.
-Adventurers could be hired to save slaves being transported to the Howlings Hills to mine silver and copper for Iuz.
-To the southeast of the Barrens is the Bluff Hills, home of the Shadow caverns and number of ruins of ancient Ur-Flan cities.
While few ruins exist in the Barrens for dungeon crawls, and there are no cities for urban adventures, the primary source of adventures stems from the conflict between Iuz and the Rovers, and to a lesser extent raiders form the Hold of Stonefist.
