I think so too. As has been observed, Gygaxian/Greyhawk/D&D elves are really not very like Tolkien's but are drawn from other sources.

Literary fictional settings are generally defined by their original authors. When authors die and their estates get ownership of the property, subsequent licensed writings by other authors are rarely ...

Lejendary Earth is closer to Oerth than Ærth is in terms of tone and magic. I have the PDF versions of the Lejendary Earth Gazetteer and Noble Knights and Dark Lands, which covers the continents of Va ...

If you read Gary Gygax's reports of his Castle Zagyg playtests (with either AD&D or Castles & Crusades rules), you'll see he's giving XP in improvised lump sums (though by no means solely for roleplay ...

The fact is that a great many people *have* been inspired by the 1980 and 1983 sets, and found them just what they needed. Others not so, but that doesn't make the products objectively deficient.

You're not pointing out faults in the World of Greyhawk, you're telling us how your preferences differ from the design philosophies of Gary Gygax and other Greyhawk writers. That's fine, but don't fra ...

I wouldn't quite say D&D = Greyhawk, even for the Gygaxian Greyhawk I'm talking about. But the World of Greyhawk is where D&D was playtested, and where all the assumptions of the rules, such as huge m ...

The World of Greyhawk was created for D&D, and until the mid-1980s at least, AD&D and the World of Greyhawk were two sides of the same coin, complementary parts of the complete world. Wher ...
