    Rangers

Hi everyone, I have a rules related question. I am running a first editon campaign in Greyhawk and one of my players is a ranger and wants to have an animal companion, a dog. Does anyone know if there is a rule or where to find that in first edition books?

    Thanks

If the ranger just wants a trained attack/war dog he can buy a trained one in the Players Handbook if I recall correctly.

If you want the dog to be a special animal companion similar to what druids have, then that will really be delayed unitl the ranger can cast animal friendship himself.

The Ranger could also gain a Dog as a Familiar once it can cast the spell required.

I've noticed a lot of people forget that Rangers get wizard spells later on, and Find Familiar is a spell they can take.

If they simply want a dog though, allow them to have a loyal dog.

There's also a priest spell called animal friendship, which essentialy makes a few HDs worth of animals your friends.

High level Ranger's get followers, too.

But I'm not sure if that's all 1E or if it's 2E that I'm remembering.

If you can get your hands on a copy (paper or electronic) of Dragon #106 you'll find a list of animal followers tailor made to order for your need on page 32. The issue dates before the conversion to 2E, so it should be perfectly compatible.

    Hope that helps!

Why not have him pick up a regular dog and role-play developing a relationship with it? I.E teaching tricks, establishing loyalty, ect.

Threadomancy(nearly 2 year-old thread). While threadomancy is fine here, it is best not to reply to a raised thread as if it is an ongoing conversation. Keep on eye on previous posting dates before posting in threads a few pages back.

Welcome to Canonfire!, and happy posting. Happy
