I've never read Star King, which is the first of a series of five books, but I've never been disappointed by anything I've read by him. His takes on what unusual environments can do to evolve societies are always fascinating. My favorites - The Dragon Masters, The Last Castle, the Planet of Adventure series, Languages of Pao, Blue World, The Houses of Iszm, Son of the Tree, The Gray Prince, Maske: Thaery.

Haven't read as much Vance as I probably should have but the 2 I have (The Dying Earth, a collection of short stories, and Lyonesse) were great.
