    World of Greyhawk Maps

    Hi all -
    There are several threads asking for maps of Greyhawk.
    I've got more than 2Gigs of maps. So I've uploaded them to my site.

    I am still uploading them as I post this - so please check back often.
    About these maps. When I know who did them, I've put that as part of their name, sometimes. If a map belongs to you and it's something that you'd not want on the site, please let me know and I'll remove it. I make no claims to these maps - some are those I've collected, stolen and scene somewhere and just kept them.
    If you have maps that you think others would like to be able to access - please e-mail them to me - you know my e-mail address - Theocrat at the Site (larger files sizes better, as if it's too small, it won't look right).
    Again I don't know who these belong to or what laws I'm breaking. Likely many. But I've got a folder and I'm sure you have a folder and so does someone else. This way we can have most maps out there and so that others can get them.
    Because there are so many maps, it will use a lot of my available bandwidth for the site - so if it goes down, check back because I'll do my best to add more (send me a PM so that I'm aware it's down).

    Issak, the link isn't working. At least, not for me. I get a Yahoo! page telling me:

    "Sorry, the page you're looking for cannot be found." Then it names the link.

    Mystic, its because the end-sentence period got sucked into the URL Issak posted. Remove the period (as rol-oeste did), and it works fine.

    Yes, it is an incredible resource to have all of this in one centralized location.

    It would be even more useful if some basic information could come with each file, though I am not sure whether you want to undertake that. I would think at a minimum: author/illustrator, source, game year represented, scale, and (if necessary) key.

    More Maps

    Hi all -
    OK, all the ones that I have that are "unsorted" are up.
    Now to upload the ones that are sorted - heh....
    Sorted means that their in a folder (that hides from me what is inside, thus the sorted part).

    And yes KIRT! What a wonderful idea - are you nominating yourself? I mean you do have a shyt load of Greyhawk Knowledge, are well respected and may even know some of the creators of such works.
    Me - as I stated in this thread and others have no idea of what belongs to who and who belongs to what. If someone owns something here and doesn't want it on the site, I'll do my best to find it and delete it from the site.
    I just have a ton of maps. I'm sure you have a ton of maps. I"m sure that many of these maps are duplicates. Maybe someone will be cool enough and sort them - and if so that would be awesome - and I could even give them access to the FTP to upload these sorted versions (and remove the unsorted ones).
    If other people have maps, please send them my way and I'll upload them.

    Only on "F"? You probably have more maps than I do(and I have a lot). If somebody will organize everything in hotlink format, like this...

    ...or something similar, I'll create a resource page, or pages(by region, artist,source, whatever) for it. Fanatics only please, as this looks like it would be a decent sized project. Happy

    The important thing this would accomplish would be to hook every single keyword in every single map title into the main site SEARCH function. That would be quite useful. Also, each map could be fit into the Geography & Cartography sub-section of the Articles page so as to be able to peruse them all in one place.

    Uploaded a few more maps. Found some from WotC's Mysterious Places articles.
    I've uploaded them to the main folder (no sub-folders). They are labeled Mysterious Places, so at least that will make it easier to find them.
    I found a ton of other maps as well. Man, my Greyhawk Collection is filled with duplicates in triplicate. I'll attempt to upload a map, only to find that it's already up there. Then I go to a new folder and upload a map, only to find that it's the same one that I'd just attempted to upload. But since Kirt hasn't responded to the offer for him to go through and re-sort and organize, I suppose it'll just stay like this.
    I've got a map from Crag on the Baklunish Basin that I just uploaded too.
    So send me your maps.

    GHO Maps

    Hi all -
    The uploaded size of all the maps is 1.5Gigs.
    I can give someone FTP Access to the site, allowing them to move, delete, folder-ize and such. If something that wasn't duplicated was deleted it wouldn't be that big of a problem as long as it was known what was deleted.
    And FTP access would be only to the Maps section of GHO - so those that have sites can keep their sanity about their personal files.
    If going through the maps and organizing them is something that someone would rather not do, but be willing to do so, granting them FTP access to manage the files is something that I'm willing to do.

    There is no link on the "index" page of GHO for the maps directory. It's not that I don't think that there should be...it's a matter of I don't do Web site design and thus the whole GHO index page is quite old (except what Cebrion did with the PayPal link).
    Of course, if someone is fluent in Web design I'd allow that to happen too. Sacrenous did suggest that I learn Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 - and I have one of the books for it - but it did seem a bit harder than InDesign so I haven't gotten that far with it.

    Since I sort of started this mess, I guess I ought to volunteer, huh? OK, if you'll get me FTP access, I'll work on unduping and organizing the maps.

    I'll start by working on organization. I was thinking something like

    - Oerth/Continental
    - Regional
    - City
    - Building/Dungeon
    - Miscellaneous

    Some HTML pages with more detailed indexes and file types would be good, too.

    Any suggestions on structure?

    I like the categories you just put forth. One note though. if a map has no artist's signature on it, but you know who the artist is, put the artist's last name in the file name like so:

    Anondson_Flanaess_Northwest

    If you don't know who the artist is, designate it in the file name like so:

    Rel_Astra_Artist_Unknown

    Everyone should endeavor to identify where any unknown maps have come from, and then the file name can be changed, as well as the credits. Once everything is categorized, I can work on an article page of descriptively named hotlinks for each map, for each category. Once those have been submitted as articles, every single map will be searchable through the site's main search function(which will be HIGHLY useful).

    I don't care at all if there are literally hundreds of maps that I will need to create hotlinks to, so don't hold back. Organizing the 160+ Postfest entries taught me a few shortcuts. Cool

    Hi all -
    Well since Cebrion didn't update the GHO site, it had to have been Carlanco (Gabriel). He must have added the PayPal link because he also added the Maps directory for the main site. Not only that, but he made it tops on the list. How Awesome.
    I've given Phil access to the FTP so we'll likely begin seeing his work in the next 5 minutes. :) Not Likely but soon enough.

    I've finished the first pass of organizing the files, but haven't really started the unduplicating process yet. Here are the folders I ended up with (slightly modified from my original proposal):

    The /pics/ directory has 'inspirational' pictures of old castles, towns, etc. I added a few of my own from living in Germany.

    Now's your chance to tell me what I've done wrong...

    Question: how to handle different formats? I.e., if the same map is in PDF, GIF, JPG, PNG, and FCW format, which to keep? My thought would be to keep the PNG and FCW if any (since FCW would be the source), and convert any GIF or JPG to PNG at some point. I'm definitely going to convert any BMP or RTF maps (which are just BMP embedded in an RTF file, I think) to another format.

    You want the long story, or the short one?

    Short version: Hepmonaland is a continent, not a friggin' island.

    Long version*: When the Dragon Annual #1 came out in 1996 with the map of Oerth, it sparked quite a debate on Greytalk. I was bored one night and avoiding studying for my quals, and took GLH's methods from "Measuring the Oerth" in OJ4 and applied them to the Annual map. I discovered that the map as presented has a HUGE ocean between the east and west edges - over 6,000 miles - and was a continent short (Oerik, Hyperboria, "unknown"). My solution was to expand Hepmonaland to the S and E to make it a real continent and break Oerik into Oerik and Aquaria (like Asia/Europe on Earth). Gary then sent me a map with that extra continent included. I converted that map and the annual map into coordinates, fed it into a map projection program in Mathematica, and cranked out a bunch of different projections of Oerth. The avatar is a modified Mollweide projection.

    Hmmm...I still have that data set with the map coordinates. Anyone know of any software that will take rectangular coordinates and do map projections? Especially Python code (trying to pick up that language).

    was wondering where to post this, and this seems to be the best location. i've searched and searched and cannot seem to find a map that matches my desires.

    so i'm making one. ^^

    i started with the abyss-darlene-terence hunt-589-map. i have been cutting and pasting (for weeks) and have accomplished the following:

    • removal of all text to a separate layer.
    • creation and population and clean-up of a legend-map key-layer containing one of every kind of city tile and every kind of terrain tile.
    • the removal of all rivers to another layer.
    • creation of a hex-grid layer which is the precise size of the tiles.
    • some general clean up.
    • patching all the holes made by removing the text and rivers with clean terrain tiles.


    i have the following goals, and thought i'd get some input from some fellow grey-talkers, just in case there is something else that would be useful. ^^ better speak up now while i'm still working on it! =D

    here is my to-do list:

    • complete redrawing of the rivers in a more appropriate lighter blue color, plus my cut and paste work has left holes in the rivers due to text and cities and so forth. i also wish i had maps of zoomed in areas so that i could "accurately" place the rivers. i know there are some around certain regions, but that is a whole 'nother order of work. ^^ in any case, the rivers will all be on their own layer.
    • cleaning up the text, or replacing it entirely with a known and findable font. i have quite a few i've downloaded, but none look quite like the font used on the existing map. when i'm finished with the text, it will be on it's own layer.
    • all cities will be replaced with a clean terrain tile underneath, and my cleaned-up-with-transparency city tiles on top. city tiles will also be on a separate layer.
    • contemplating including a political layer with faint transparent coloration for all the various geo-political boundaries.
    • contemplating including all the referenced non-humanoid and otherwise minor kingdoms passingly mentioned in the gazetteer and living gazetteer, plus any other sources. would have to pretty much make up the boundaries which might result in two layers, one defining the general region, and the other coloring made-up specific boundaries.
    • contemplating a layer coloring the territories claimed by dragons and such like various entities.
    • contemplating making a new tile to represent the great rift.


    at the very least, my end result will be a map having a background base layer, and layers which can be selectively turned on or off: rivers, cities, and text. thus you can have a clean flaaness map, or you can rename the cities or whatever else you care to label. or the entire map can be tossed and you could use the existing city and terrain tiles from the legend-key layer to make an entirely bright-new map. ^^

    feedback and suggestions are welcome. if desired i can post some screenshots of the work-in-progress highlighting the various accomplishments.


    btw: a basic windows-based map-projection program called MicroCAM is available in the public domain (for non-commercial purposes) and can be downloaded from here. hope that helps!

    Hi all -
    That is certainly an ambitious attempt.
    You may want to look at Dragon Magazine's four part map instead of the Darlene map. It has many of the newer towns and aspects that are not part of the Darlene map. Although, I'm unsure if the one that you're using with all those source names is better or not.
    Next, you may also want to look at Eric Andorson (sp?)'s maps as well as Anna's Flanaesses maps. Both are most excellent and showcase many of the smaller regions with tributary rivers and minor towns and ruins.
    Of course, we'd love too see your work progress - Anna has her own section of the forums for her maps and Cebrion might be able to set something up for you as well if you are in need of something like that to further your research as well as direction.

    *^^* i obviously failed to poke around enough before i posted this. i will have to find anna's and eric's maps to look at.

    i finally settled on the darlene map because i did not find anything better via google and other forms of trawling. it had the most regular tiles, instead of a hex grid that appeared to be lain over the an irregular drawing.

    edit: ah yes. i ran into anna's maps over on the cartography forum independently. they are fantastic! unfortunately, the level of realism prevents easy tiling, and while i look forward eagerly to seeing more of her work, and might even try my hand at it at some point in the future, i was looking for a more abstract representation for my own initial foray into mapping. ^^ i'll hunt up a way to host some screenshots and have something up in a while.

    update:

    i have completely finished merging the new background tiles with the original layer of the map. as i was working in raster, some of the copied tiles are sharper and more contrasted than the rest of the map, though this gives a slight flowing feel at 100% zoom or less; it only becomes highly distinguishable at closer zoom ratios. at some point, i may give consideration to converting or redrawing each tile in vector format to eliminate that. on the other hand, that basically entails retiling the entire map.

    the palattes i used are on a special layer, just for them. by default this layer is turned off.

    the legend consists of a row of tiles and descriptions across the bottom where there was some extra room.

    next up are text and rivers. i was wanting some input from everyone. as i simply cannot seem to find a reference to what font was used, nor a similar font anywhere, are there any feelings for or against using a completely new font for all the map text? it would be fairly simple to use a new font. but i'm open to any suggestions, especially knowledge of any free fonts and most especially if anyone knows of a font resembling that on the darlene map.

    i am also going to include a 'legal' layer, to notate previous mappers (terrance hunt, abyss, darlene), and myself. this layer will also be turned off by default. should the new font be a go-ahead, then i will notate the name and origin of the font, for future use and reference.

    once i have the initial steps done, i was also contemplating making layers which contain changes over time; for example: cities becoming ruins, or changing names... new cities or towns being built and so forth. thoughts on this? anyone excited by this prospect?
    each layer would indicate the year it covers. i could probably use some help with a master timeline to check off against. this idea could also be expanded to include sub-layers containing population movement, political changes and boundaries, and much more.

    another thing that i have contemplated is the creation of some new tiles. i've already mentioned that a rift and/or separate cliff tile is needed for the great rift. but i've also noticed that a number of tiles in the arctic region do not have a corresponding cold version of the tile. the dense mountain tile has an arctic version, as does the swamp/marsh tile and the dense forest tile.
    but the light mountain, light forest, and grassland tiles do not. another thought is more variance in the water tiles, increasing the represented depths to four or five or more tile colors might be handy, especially for the nyr'dyv. opinions?

    feedback is welcome, please give your opinions!

    Hi all -
    Abysslin...! You back? As in back, or just here wondering where your maps are?
    I don't have all of your maps. I wish I did.
    In fact, I have a dilemma. One of the posts above said that a map or picture is 14MB and is an issue with the host. It shouldn't be for us, since I have 3G of space and 50G of bandwidth (or some such - I can always give more space/bandwidth as needed and remove it from sites that don't need it).
    The dilemma revolves around accessing the site via FTP to allow people to upload their maps. On another thread someplace someone was asking about a map of some town R something (Cebrion likely knows what it is or what). If they find that map of that town, I have already created a basic account for people to access the FTP to be able to upload maps. However, if I do that and give them access to GHO/maps - they can 'accidentally' delete maps too. So I can instead make another site GHO/maps/PUBLIC - with a generic user name and no password so that people can freely upload any map to that spot - yes it could be deleted, but then only those that are in that PUBLIC file and only if someone with full access (Oerthman, Cebrion and myself - plus I suppose Abysslin if he has his user/password remembered) hasn't moved the file to a safer location.
    If that were the case, I'd suggest we make a new thread 'sticky' or 'announcement' with the user/password so that people can freely upload maps and pictures that they find of Greyhawk Content. Maybe even a section for pictures of Greyhawk stuff (like an illegal nekkid picture of Jazzaerli [whatever the chick on the circle of 5 is named]). Location based pictures (like Real World pictures that would look cool, like Bannerman's Arsenal), and even GH pictures of regions. But that type of stuff would have to be something that would be looked at.
    But for now with the maps, is it a "GOOD" idea for them to be accessible via an FTP for all to upload? Do you guys like the idea of making a general GHO/PUBLIC folder for people to upload via FTP cool files? But then how to I handle any potential viruses? That's why I'm not in charge, I just host the stuff, cause I don't know.

    hmmmm, nice. i would be very happy if the modifications i'm doing to the map could be hosted on a more official greyhawk site, rather than filefont. is that abysslin as in abyss on the darlene map?

    as far as security and safety goes, that is a real issue. viruses can now be incorporated into image files directly, as well as more traditional means. the safest method might perhaps be that of having an open machine that is used to host/store the uploaded ftp files, then run them though a virus checker and so forth, before moving them to the storage computer, which can have read only access open. a lot depends on the setup on the host side.

    having a public directory is one option, though perhaps it might be wise to not publish the access directly into a thread, but rather make it available upon request? or indicate what the access is much in the same way the forum asks a greyhawk question when posting.

    i haven't found a way of uploading a picture file to the forum yet, perhaps i have not looked around enough. i did however, make a copy of the entire map-ftp site for my own archives. ^^

    the three pictures linked to are a redo and cleanup of the terrancehunt-abyss-darlene map turning it into a layered map with cities and text on different layers, making them able to be turned off. the first has the rivers turned off, the second has the rivers and text turned off, the third has the rivers, text, and cities turned off.

    i hope that they are being found useful!

    Hrm. Well.

    I followed that link, and you've got some cool stuff there, and I liked the illustration of all the races you have in the "new uploads" section. However, whoever drew that, got the Flan all sorts of wrong.

    According to Gary, whom I emailed about this subject specifically, the Flan were based off of Ancient Nubia, in look and feel. The artist depicts them as Native Americans, clearly.

    Unfortunately, I don't have records of these emails, so I don't really have a way to back up this claim. Nevertheless, that's what he told me.

    I thought maybe someone would want to know.

    Well, it's been awhile since I actually perused this forum, and I find that good ol' Theocrat is up to promoting the artists of Canonfire (in addition to the cartographers), and I didn't even know it!

    As the "whoever" in question, I'd like to address the intent of the illustration. It was never meant to depict what every single culture of every single race looks like. I took some of my favorite cultures and illustrated them. Not all Baklunish are so redily identifiable as Turks and Arabs, there are plenty of other Suel in the world than Vikings and Scarlet Brotherhood monks, Touv are not all jungle savages, and halflings aren't hobbits at all, anymore. It's just a few depictions of the many variations of infinite possibilities.

    As to their supposed erroneous nature, the Rovers of the Barrens are likely the penultimate counter-example of what the Flan are. The Rovers (not Flan in general) have adopted many things from other areas and cultures near them. They are consistently described in lore and canon as not being like typical Flan, and that results in their almost universally being regarded as something akin to the people commonly referred to as Native Americans in our world. If one were to imagine a native culture (like most Flan) and mix in the Baklunish horse riding culture of the Wolf Nomads (whom are decidedly Mongolian) I would imagine that Native Americans would bear a close similarity.

    Beyond that, Art is never - and say again for emphasis - NEVER, ever "wrong". It is an interpretation of other work by an artist. Much in the same way that "fanon" isn't wrong, by definition. There is no canon claim contained within the work, it is simply presented as a (rather old) piece of art that some might find interesting or useful.

    I do appreciate the willingness to critique the work, and am glad that it is getting use and being seen around our fair site.

    Riftcanyon Map

    Has anyone made a map of the Riftcanyon? I have been wanting to do this forever, and I've started using a couple other maps as resources, but I never could do anything I liked. I then tried to use a map of the Grand Canyon as a base, and do it like that, but again, I just couldn't do it well.

    So, I'm reaching out to you guys. Does anyone know if this has been done?

    Actually, anything which is more than just a basic outline. :)

    I started to do two types of maps. First, I was just doing a basic map which would show various locations, cave entrances, lairs, etc. Pretty much the same as any map for a specific nation/small area. However, it seemed lacking and I gave up. I then tried to make it more of a physical map, with contours and such like a geologic survey map. That was way too complicated, and again, I just didn't have time so I gave up.

    I'm just wondering if anyone has done anything in this regard, making any kind of map of the Riftcanyon.

    Something is nagging at my memory. I could be mistaken, but I think there is a more detailed Rift Canyon map, and I think it has to do with Living Greyhawk: Bandit Kingdoms material. Such a map might not be all that easy to find, if it exists, but you never know...

    I found this, which is a map of Melas Chasma, the widest part of the Valles Marineris on Mars. This is exactly what I'm looking to do with the Riftcanyon. Man, I wish I had good mapping ability!

    I also found other maps, following the wikipedia link above, which showed other parts of Valles Marineris, such as Ius Chasma and and Candor Chasma, as well as a huge full canyon map. I'm debating taking these as a foundation for something on the Riftcanyon. I just don't know how good I can do it. I guess we'll see.

    Anyway, I thought I'd post that link above, so others can take a look at what I found and see if they like it too, maybe discuss what we can do with it, if anything.

    Well, based on the directory settings, the directory should be viewable. But it's still not.

    Regardless, I dug around on the server, and didn't find any very many maps in the folder at all, and none at the root /maps/ folder level---the few that were there, were all in sub-folders.

    Isaak: did you remove the maps at some point in the past?

    grodog: I believe somebody reorganized the ftp files, not realizing what it would do to all of the links on Canonfire! (lots of fun for me to be sure, and there are still some dead links due to missing files that I do not have/cannot access). Things may look a bit different in the files for that reason, but I can't be certain. If you can, I would appreciate it if you would either send the files to me, or host them elsewhere (dropbox perhaps) so I can hunt for any missing things. That might be a lot of stuff, so give me a heads-up by PM first. Laughing
