Moniker For The Nameless One Behind The Screen

I was simply curious as several friends have argued over the issue...

So which moniker do you use for "The Nameless One Behind The Screen"Question

Of course the eternal "Heartless Bast***" is assumed when a favourite character that you have nutured for years and seen through countless adventures dies because of three natural 20s in a row.

Not that I am bitter or anything...

Call me "old fashioned," or whatever, but I'm not interested in this modern day "politically correct" stuff. Dungeon Master works for me.

I use DM, but sometimes slip to GM, and enough of my players came to D&D later in their RPG careers that DM isn't always their first choice.

I answered "Dungeon Master", but that's a little misleading. I use "DM" for fantasy games, "GM" for all others, and referee for blind wargaming - where you can't see your opponent's position.

Note that those are literal - DM and GM - not the full phrase.

Same thing for me "DM" or "GM" I'll use either.

    Games Operation Director.

It keeps the players from forgetting rule #1: All rules are subject to arbitrary change in order to make the game more fun.

    Nameless DM

Honestly ... I prefer "DM" since I started playing D&D before anything else, but when I play games other than D&D, "GM" has come into more common parlance.

My personal preference overall though ... I like "Storyteller", because it's more about the plot and storylines than being a "referee" of rules arbitration. If I'm playing a gmae that is rules heavy and is double blind, I will say "referee", but I don't like the term.

Yeah, we could be playing Candyland and I would somehow manage to be called the DM.

You mean everybody doesn't do that?

I always use DM myself. Thirty years of habit is hard to break. But now that I think about it, since I occasionally dabble in third-party stuff I have to admit I'm becoming more accustomed to GM.

I am with bubba there. I like the sound of GM too, it makes me feel like I'm the General Manager of a sports team or something.

But "Dungeon Master" sounds like you're some type of torturer... and the players must be punished.

Anyone who plays in one of my games is gonna be punished.

Sadism aside, I use DM, GM, & ST interchangeably but if I am running a D&D game I'll most often use DM.
