The Oerth of 100,000 Years Ago

What was going on, on Oerth, if one looks back 100,000 years? Inspired by Neptune Grass , I am devising a 100,000 year-old fey to be placed possibly beneath the Jungle of Lost Ships or the Sunless Sea.

GV Dammerung's Scrying the Ancients and The Natural History of Furyondy are instructive. This was the Middle Paleolithic on our world and approximately the time of Kull of Atlantis (the Thurian Age) in Robert E. Howard's stories. In GV Dammerung's history, I'd say 100,000 years ago was the height of the prehuman Atalan people, though with the southern lands still dominated by reptilian races such as the serpentfolk. Some time later, the Atalan would be destroyed in a vast cataclysm (possibly identifiable with the Battle of Pesh) that changed the axial tilt of Oerth and began an ice age.

Bear-sized predators known as grigaur (LGJ # 2) may or may not have been roaming the Flanaess. Smile

Oh yeah! The cataclysm that destroyed the grigaurs might be identified with the polar shift mentioned in GVD's history.

The Shattered Circle by Bruce Cordell deals with an ancient artifact bringing extinct creatures back to life, though some of those creatures are conjured from ancient nightmares rather than history.

I've been browesing humanoid races to use as something new in my latest game and how about the Yuan-ti. Theres several mention's of them haveing kingdoms (city-states) in the Amedio and Hepmonaland areas.

Be probabely like Aztec and Mayan civilizations, only more heavily magic influenced.

Everything was part of the Primodial Ooze.

So, basically, way back when, it was a standard Aeolius campaign, just with with more chunks floating in the sea soup. Laughing

I tend to think of the Yuan-ti as more recent arrivals to Oerth, chiefly due to the fact that the Olman god Tlaloc created them in a dark pact with some of his worshipers c. -1100 CY (see tSB). Though I suppose it's possible yuan-ti could've existed on Oerth before that.

That's why I prefer Cebrion's serpentfolk for this purpose; analogous to the yuan-ti, yet far more ancient and without a connection to humanity.

The Olman yuan-ti may well be only the most recent iteration of that scaly breed, however. Tlaloc might have been appropriating a far more ancient rite.

I believe that it was in one of his "untitled" Conan stories that Robert Howard envisioned an reptilian people. They had human bodies, but the heads were like those of crocodiles, or alligators. Evil Grin

The story is somewhere in my collection. I'll look through it a little later and see if I can find the exact reference. Wink

Unfortunately, he never got the chance to fully develop these peoples during his all too brief career. Sad

Its implied that they are a "swamp" people -- an ancient civilization from the past -- but we find them living in a ziggurat temple, buried under the sands of a desert. Shocked

In one story, "The Shadow Kingdom" the Children of the Serpent try to take over the court of Aquilonia(because they can shape-shift or use illusions to disguise themselves Evil Grin) and assassinate Conan. You can probably figure out what happens in that scenario. Laughing

I haven't given too much information out on the Serpentfolk yet, but I indeed wrote them to be one of the forerunner races, and that they predate the yuan-ti by tens of millenia. There is a whole article expounding on this that I need to complete.

Didn't the serpent folk appear in 1st Ed cb2 Conan: against Darkness? I think they were snake people, though.

No, they are not based on Howard's writings, as I created them before I read any Conan stories. I created them to be a pure serpent race, like lizardmen and troglodytes are, and not hybrids that yuan-ti are. The yuan-ti are a serpentfolk offshoot. Basically, Meershaulk is an upstart usurper god that filled a niche when the Serpent Goddess began to lose power, while the Serpent Mother is the primordial mother goddess.

The true reason that I created the serpentfolk was because I was taking a very experienced and well-read DM through an adventure that I wrote, and I wanted to throw something new at him. It snow-balled from there. Laughing

Sounds awesome. I look forward to seeing the completed work. Cool

And thanks for that spelling correction. I knew it was incorrect, but I was suffering from "brain-lock." Shocked Laughing

Actually, you're thinking Kull & Valusia, Howard's pre-Hyborian Age hero & kingdom. Apparently, while REH created the serpent-folk, this was the only story of his they appeared in. They were, however, adopted by other writers & worked into both Conan tales & the Cthulhu mythos.

You are correct sir! I'm saying "Conan", but thinking of a Kull story. I probably shouldn't have read both collections back to back, as they blend together in my mind. Happy

Anyways, the Weird Tales authors often borrowed liberally from one another.

Kull, Conan, or Bran Mak Morn . . . what's the difference? Evil Grin Laughing

Howard reused a lot of his material over and over again. It's easy to get the stories confused. Wink
