    Uz? Ooz? Iz? *sigh*

Ok. This is driving me a little crazy. Every time I attempt to pronounce "Iuz" it gets titters from my peanut gallery (ie. my players). How can it possibly strike terror into my players if every time it's spoken, people want to wipe their boots of spider-climbing on the nearest patch of grass?

And while I've got the floor and I'm sure somebody's having a little fun, but in the entry for the Blades of Corusk on the Ghwiki, it lists the blade - The Edge - as a member of U2. Just thought somebody might want to know that is in there... :)

That's pronounced Eye-ooze, and if they ever played in the Bandit Kingdoms in the old LG campaign, they would not have laughed long! Wink

The Edge is a member of U2. It is also the name of an artifact sword. The entry isn't meant to imply that the two The Edges are one and the same.

The question of whether or not any of the members of U2 might actually be magical swords from the world of Oerth has vexed philosophers for centuries, Mystic. I have to admit that it's impossible for me to say for certain one or the other.

According to Dragon #93's "Ay pronunseeAYshun gyd." by Frank Mentzer, it can also be pronounced "yooz," or "EE-uz." I think EGG has stated that "eye-ooze" is the preferred pronunciation, however.

I prefer (ee)YOOZ myself, only slightly pronouncing the ee.

LGG p173 says "EYE-ooze" (Chapter 7 was written by Sean Reynolds). Then the Dragon Compendium updated the old Mentzer article and included all three: "yooz, EE-uz, or EYE-ooze".

I've always said "uz" because it garners the fewest snickers.

If you want snickering, how about "Melf the Elf?" I think Iuz is safe.

    Silly names

Well, although I try for a Latin-esque pronunciation of it, I pretty much go with "EYE-ooze".

Although, on the note of other names: For some reason, Melf the Elf always makes me think of Ralph the Mouth, from Happy Days. I almost exclusively refer to him as "Prince Brighflame, of Celene". It's like one of those names that no one ever says where they can be heard. I s'pose friends or family might use it with him personally. But, public conversation is always the formal name. ... just like I wouldn't ever call President Obama by his first name. We typically just call him "Obama". Thus, he's generally, "Brightflame".

Thanks for everyone's input. We'll see which one of them is laughing when they get shanghaied and put on a Rhenee barge bound for somewhere up north. Evil Grin

To be honest, I've never had anyone chortle over The Old One's name. Even if they did laugh about it, I guarantee it wouldn't laugh once they tangled with one of his priests. In a game that I am currently running through the Lost Caverns, the players have been plagued by a rival faction loyal to Iuz, and the priests in that group, coupled with some mages, have greatly reduced the party number. In fact, more losses have resulted from that group than those taken by all the hostile monsters combined! Play up the sheer horror and vileness of those people, play them well, and I am sure the snickering will stop. Evil Grin

p.s. let me know if you need some hints...

I always pronounced it "EYE-ooze" never really had much issue over it.

Honestly I had much more issue over Egg of Coot than Iuz.

I definitely agree with the like button. There's been several things I've read on here where I thought the same exact thing.

Heh! Yes, Coot. I can't wait until I say that one. I imagine it to be this big, sickly green sentient meteorite that seeped some sort of slime. Razz Maybe there is a connection there for your adventure, Aeolius?

Hey, Lanthorn. I was reading some things in the Oerth Journal's about Iuz and how prefered his "food" prepped, whether it was elf, human or halfling. It was pretty gruesome and creepy. Anything you can offer to add to that, go for it!

Heck, yes! That would be cool. Cool I'd love to hear them. I've been enjoying your posts a lot.

I've got low level PCs just starting and I need a couple of interesting Iuz related bad guys to use as red herrings as I've got the Scarlet Brotherhood ones squared away.

I agree that Lyme is a great antagonist. Though it has grown on me, I do remember thinking that his name sounded a bit silly when I first read the module. Smile

Not meaning to rehash this, but I've been playing the computer version of the Temple of Elemental Evil and have reached the point where Iuz is summoned.

In the game -- voices are included -- they pronounce it "Eye-ooze."

Just thought you'd like to know. Wink

Melf, Prince Brightflame. Cousin to the Elf queen of Celene.

Also, I always thought that "Quij" was a goofy name. He was the Half-orc henchman of Lord Robilar, currently hiding in plain sight in the City of Greyhawk.

LMAO Evil Grin would explain all those weird messages I received as a teenager... Thought I was getting messages from the "wrong spirit!" All those misspellings and half sentences..... and to think I blamed my brother for "pushing the pointer". I am sure he will be vindicated now that we know it was a half orc instead. hehe
