    Newkeep

Way back in DRAGON #57, Gary Gygax introduced the town of Newkeep. For reference, here's the text:
    Quote:
When the dwarven folk of the Iron Hills marched against Chelor, the Count of Sunndi dispatched a force to serve with his ally to the west. Some 1,000 light horse and 3,000 infantry joined the ldeesh above Naerie, with 3,000 gray elves reinforcing the unit. In addition, a regiment of dwarves, gnomes and halflings of the Hollow Highlands, over 3,000 strong, moved into the hills above Newkeep (a town of some 2,500 persons located at V2-149).

While V2-149 are not valid hex coordinates on the Darlene map, I suspect what was intended was V2-94, five hexes north of Naerie. (This is hex "V2-149" if the hex rows are erroneously read from the left, rather than from the right.) This location seems to place Newkeep in Idee, which seems in keeping with Gygax's context. (The Sunnd forces were coming to support Idee.)

The LGG map places Newkeep in a similar position, north of Naerie. However, the text inexplicably includes Newkeep in Sunndi. Subsequent Living Greyhawk materials relocated Newkeep to the eastern edge of the Hollow Highlands to "correct" this misplacement. The DUNGEON map kept this new location.

I'm of a mind that Newkeep was always intended to be in Idee, and I'm thinking about putting it back there. In place of the Sunndi location, I might use Adder's Haven (the LG name for the settlement before the Wars). Does anyone have any thoughts about this place?

    Nice detective work there. Smile

I think you're wise to go with the contextually supported placement (Idee) as the confusion appears to be more editorial than ideological (though I love the old stuff with all my heart, the editing was shoddy rather often).

As far as the name change, I'd use Newkeep as the pre-wars name and Adder's Haven as the post-wars name. Perhaps the influx of refugees brought about the new name? In a rather less-than-positive manner, to boot?

    Just my 2¢.

    Best of luck, regardless. Happy
