    Obscurement (in the air)

A priest casts this spell while in the air. There is no range, so the mists arise around the caster.

Do the vapors stay aloft or do they sink to the ground?

I would say the mist stays aloft. It doesn't say anything about sinking to fill holes or depressions below ten feet (which some of the similar wizard spells do), so I think it is fixed until the spell expires (sans wind, of course).

Very true. Cloudkill sinks as the vapors are heavy and dense (specifically stated in spell description). The Obscurement spell says nothing whatsoever about it, meaning the writers of the spell description didn't think of that possibility, in my mind.

Taken from the point of science (ahem! disclaimer here), wondering if the mist is denser than surrounding air. As it contains water vapor, you have to ask if it is more like a cloud (not true mist, but perhaps akin in composition) or like a fog bank (denser and thus hugs the ground). If more like the former, it would remain stationary. If more like the latter, it will sink.

I am generally loathe to go to physics when trying to figure out how spells operate in unlisted scenarios, since physics says magic can't work. :)

Considering strong winds only minimize the duration, rather than blowing the mist away or anything else, it seems like the magic keeps the mist in place.

I am guilty as charged on this since I am a science teacher. Embarassed

I did some more digging into the various "fog" type spells, specifically Cloudkill, Wall of Fog, and Fog Cloud. Cloudkill outright states it is dense and sinks. Wall of Fog says nothing. Fog Cloud, however, permits two different types of uses. The former is akin to a Wall of Fog whereas the second use is much like a Cloudkill in appearance, right down to the fact that it sinks.

Thusly, I maintain that unless otherwise specifically stated in the spell description, all fog or mist-like spells do NOT sink and stay right where they are cast.

    thanks to all!
