    Dont know if my comment was aved on your blog.

    I highly recommend a reading of CJ Cherryh's 'Gate' quadology. I believe her work, which is immaginative and evocative, is the source material and inspiration behind many of the modern 'gate' depictions.

    I have read at least the first three of those, and enjoyed them. They were mentioned in Greenwood's Theory & Use of Gates article from TD#37, and I eventually tracked them down; that same article also turned me on to James H. Schmitz' SF short stories, which are phenomenal if you've not checked them out.
