    Oerth Journal 34 - graphics

I have submitted an article to the OJ. I don't know if it will be selected or if it will make it past the editing phase. Regardless of if it is selected and passes or not, I was wondering how graphics, if any, are handled?

Who selects them and vets them for inclusion? What are the criteria?

No. I haven't been on the discord since... a certain incident. So, I'll just patiently wait here for a reply. He's replied to me on another thread in the Beyond Flanaess section since that time, so I believe he will notice eventually.

    Thanks!

I guess if you see him sooner than I do, point him to the question here, since we are both curious?

    Hey there!
Well, I guess I should thank Longetalos and Cebrion for trying to make sure I see the thread.
    A bit of a digression, first ...
Unfortunately, this forum hasn't really been in consistent use for the Oerth Journal since about '13. The Publisher/Editor at the time used Canonfire for the discussion since there wasn't another place for it. There were only a couple or few posts in the couple of years that followed that. The current issues of the OJ have been mentioned here by other users, but that's about it. And, honestly, I had to even go through and read those, just now.

At any rate, it does bring to my attention that we ought to find a more principal place to bring these kinds of questions up. The official Discord chat has thus far likely to be the best place to do that, as Longetalos pointed out. Comments and questions can also be made on the Oerth Journal page on GreyhawkOnline, or on other OJ topics like announcements and previews also on Greyhawk Online, or by emailing the OJ team directly at OJ@GreyhawkOnline.com.

Anywhoozle, so to the topic at hand -
The artwork is sometimes found or suggested by an author.
Otherwise, sometimes I will find art for it myself if there's not any from the author.

The "vetting" is simply that it cannot be artwork for which the copyright is owned by anyone else, without permission from the artist who created it.

So, using images from google searches and such are right out.

Other than that, it must be public domain or available under policies that allow its use.

On the occasions I find an artist willing to contribute their art, they sign a release form permitting use much in the same way an author does if their article is used.
I always welcome help and suggestions about using particular pieces of art for the magazine.

Are images that appear in official WotC products fair game under the fan use of WotC IP rules?

In the spirit of sharing, Pixabay, Pexels, and Unsplash all have many photos which are licensed for public use up to and including both alterations to the images, and commercial use of the original/altered images.

I'm an artist, and so if I had access to the layout such that I could tailor the images to the expected dimensions, I might be able to do something interesting with that.

    They are, in fact!
That's actually why I included the "policies that allow its use" bit! Wink
As long as we're not using their logos, most WotC art can be used for fan content.

Actually, I do use some of those. There's some good art there, if one looks around.

It's actually easy enough for me to change the dimensions of art and whatnot in layout. They don't actually have to be tailored so fit, really.

Although, we're always in need of new artists.
Honestly, there's not really enough new art in the OJ, in my opinion.
If you'd like to submit your portfolio so we can look at your art, or something, or just link some images, or email oj@greyhawkonline.com, or something, I'd be more than happy to look at it! Happy

Hmmm, what there is of a portfolio is on my website. Here's a link: https://twinseraphim.wordpress.com/art-projects/

With the exception of the Fairy Castle (which was drawn last year) all of them are very old images.

I have been focused on learning how to write for a number of years now, so I have not done any artwork, other than the one which was specifically requested of me.
