    Known World

    Hi

    Sorry for beginner's question.

I found mention about Known World setting in the old Dungeon magazines.
What it is? Is this setting related to Greyhawk World?

    Thanks

Known World was the setting used in Basic/Expert/Etc D&D, later renamed Mystara for AD&D2e. It has no relation to Greyhawk.

The Known World shares GH's Blackmoor and Tenh. Is this just a case of similar names? Up to you. IMC, there is a linkage. As well as with Dave Arneson's Blackmoor published for Judges Guild and for 3E.

Arguably, such a link is "canonish" given the write up of Blackmoor in Dungeon that used Fred Weining's OJ article that drew from the Known World Blackmoor.

Chatdemon has also done an outstanding map of Mystara-Oerth, grafting the Flanaess onto the Known World. I don't have the URL to his website handy unfortunately. Perhaps, the man himself can point the way. Wink

That map eats up too much bandwidth on the lame freesite I have, so I'm cautious about sending a ton of hits over there, but have no fear, I recently submitted it to Canonfire. It should appear soon.

Whoa, was this YOUR map, CD? - I mean the b/w map showing the Flanaess and *two Mystaran continents*? This one inspired me to put the savage coast south of Aquaria for a short revival of my annual *Oceans of Oerth* game...

    Smile

The original concept and map was done by James Mishler. I simply reorientated the map (so the continents are not split across the edges of the map, and prettied it up a bit.

What I assume is the original can be found here: http://www.mystaranet.jamm.com/vaults/html/mystghmp.jpg

The continent all the way to the right looks disturbingly familiar....

Yep. Definitely a rough sketch of Skandinavia.

    Yup, that is James's original.

Here's the link to my rendition of it, until such time as it appears on CF.

Scroll down to the Mystoerth link (warning: it's a BIG file)

Yeah, the Known World/Mystara world map is simply a map of Pangaea (the theorized pre-continental shift "proto-continent" of real world earth) with new names attached.

Personally, I like CD's Mystoerth Map better than the Dragon Annual Map, which I found to be kinda dull (Nippon? Sigh. Yawn.), and small. If I were in charge, I'd make Mystoerth "canon" in the the next iteration of GH. Great work Chatdemon! Smile

Yah, Rich and I fell in love with James Mischler's concept when we first saw it on Vaults of Pandius, and for our campaign, it has definitely become canon.

Aside from being a lot more interesting than the canon Oerth map, it lets you have access to whole new adventure realms that have some material written for them but are far enough away to explain lack of contact. If you limit Mystara to its early Known World material, it has a flavor very similar to Greyhawk, IMO.

And there it is now! Check the front page.

And for those who are interested in the Known World/Mystara as well as Greyhawk, I am currently working on support material for that map, to make the merged "mystoerth" world a playable campaign setting.
