    Favorite Things, Greyhawk-style

From the days of yore on AOL comes a filk on "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music, a spontaneous collaboration between Iquander (Erik Mona), TSR Roger (Roger Moore), and Tamerlain (Steve Wilson). Julie Andrews voice is optional.

Little things? The little things we like?

Valley elfs scouting for nasty intruders,
    Two-headed liches with magic computers,
Wizards named Gaxx who make artifact rings,
These are a few of my favorite things...

White Plumed Mountains and hidden troll caches
Cities named Greyhawk, and From the Ashes
Dragons named Volt, with great dragon wings
These are a few of my favorite things....

    Paladin cowboys with magic six-shooters,
Half-buried starships whose robots kill looters,
    Crumbling empires with mad Overkings,
These are a few of my favorite things.....

Towns in the Gran March with Nagas as deities,
Traitors named Rary and near-upset treaties,
The portly mage Otto's spell Ice Storm that sings,
These are a few of my favorite things!

Tales of a Comet from Selvor the Younger,
A sword called Blackrazor with magical hunger,
The tripartite item and Sleeper it brings,
These are a few of my favorite things!

An Isle of the Ape and a 'Venture Fantastic,
An AOL folder that sometimes is spastic,
A guy named Iuz and the spittle he flings,
These are a few of my favorite things!

Five novels by Estes, about which I'm pensive,
A joke Castle Greyhawk that some find offensive,
Some mystical puppets and gargoyles sans wings,
These are a few of my favorite things!

When the kech bites, when the stirge stings,
When the Emperor's Mad, I simply remember my
Favorite things...and then I don't feel so baaaaaaaad!

A few of MY favorite things!!

Oerthman ... I just can't find the words for how much you rock. That was one of the greatest posts I have read in ages!!

I actually sang the entire thing outloud, and had to stifle my raucous laughter, for fear of being so loud that I would wake others!

I think that I am going to be forced to come up with a verse or two of my own and throw 'em into the thread! Just friggin' HILARIOUS!!

Hey, give the props where they are due - I'm just an archaeologist, digging up the past. Smile

There was another one I remember that I bet I have stored away - to the tune of "American Pie" by Don Mclean. I'll check when I have a chance.

Thanks for digging the rest up!

Five Estes novels, about which I'm pensive,
A "joke" Castle Greyhawk that I find offensive,
Some mystical puppets and gargoyles sans wings,
These are a few of my UN-favorite things!

    Subj: The Day Greyhawk Died
    Date: 97-03-28 19:32:28 EST
    From: NiteScreed

To the tune of American Pie by Don McLean (This gets complicated so watch
    your meter)

    A long, long time ago
I can still remember how Greyhawk used to make me smile

And I knew, if given a chance,
Greyhawk could make cash register's dance
And gamers would be happy for quite awhile.

    But TSR made me shiver,
With each Child's Play they'd deliver
    Badnews on the doorstep
Greyhawk couldn't take many more steps.

    I can't remember if I cried
When I heard that Greyhawk had died.
But something touched me deep inside,
    The day the music died.

    So, bye, bye Obad-hai.
Went down to the Nyr Dyv but the Nyr Dyv was dry.
And Mordernkainen was drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this will be the day that I die.

    Do you play AD&D?
And do you believe in Greyhawk's destiny?
    I've got to know.
Do you believe in rock n' roll?
Or do you think TSR will save your mortal soul?
I tell you if you'll dance with me real slow.

I know that you're in love with them.
But kiss'n up won't bring Grehawk back again.
You've gotta kick off your shoes,
    And dig these rhythmic blues.

I was like a lonely teenage bronc'n buck,
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck,
But I knew I was outa luck,
    The day Greyhawk died.

    I started singing
    Bye, bye Obad-hai.
Went down to the Nyr Dyv but the Nyr Dyv was dry.
And Mordernkainen was drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this will be the day that I die.

Now for five years we've been on our own
And moss grows fast on a rolling stone
But that's not how it has to be.

When the Jester sings for the King and Queen
In a coat he borrowed from James Dean
Its a voice that comes from you and me.
And when the King was looking down
The Jester stole the Realms crown.
    The Realms folder was adjourned
    The verdict was returned.

And while Sean & Rob read their book of Marx
Greyhawk got loose in the park.
And we sang dirges in the dark
    For the day Greyhawk died.

We were singing, bye, bye Obad-hai.
Went down to the Nyr Dyv but the Nyr Dyv was dry.
And Mordernkainen was drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this will be the day that I die.

Helter skelter, in a summer swelter
At Gencon saw Lorraine and almost belt'd her.
Nine folders behind and FRs falling fast.

    FR landed flat on its
When TSR tried this Arcane Age passe.
And the Jester on the sidelines had the last laugh.

Now, FR's failure is sweet perfume,
As Greyhawk strikes up a marching tune.
We all got up to dance
But TSR won't give us the chance.
When Greyhawk tried to take the field,
    TSR refused to yield.
    Remember what this revealed,
    The day FR died.

We were singing, bye, bye Obad-hai.
Went down to the Nyr Dyv but the Nyr Dyv was dry.
And Mordernkainen was drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this will be the day that I die.

Oh we were altogether in one place,
    A generation in cyberspace,
And with time still left to start again.

So, Tam be nimble. Sam be quick.
If we're good, we can turn the trick,
But flames are a rebels only friend.

As I watch Greyhawk denied the stage,
My hands clench in fists of rage.
Only a demon born in hell.
    Can break TSR's spell.

So, I climbed high into the Nite
    And lit the sacrificial light,
Now TSR wasn't laughing with delight,
    That Greyhawk had died.

I started singing, bye, bye Obad-hai.
Went down to the Nyr Dyv but the Nyr Dyv was dry.
And Mordernkainen was drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this will be the day that I die.

I met a TSR while singing the blues
And asked him for some happy news
But he just smiled and turned away.

I went down to the sacred store,
Where I'd seen Greyhawk years before
But the man there said TSR wouldn't let it be played.

    In cyberspace, Greyhawkers screamed.
The fans wrote letters and the rebels dreamed.
But not a word was spoken.
    TSR's heart was unbroken.

And the three posters I admired most,
Chaos, Sam, Hrsnash and his ghost,
They caught the last train for the coast,
    The day the music died.

    And they were singing, (Refrain)

    NS (It had been awhile)

Yeah, that's the one. Doesn't quite have the same punch now as it did then. Too many AOL in-jokes.

Still wonder who NiteScreed was, tho. Does everyone know but me? :-)

I don't think it has ever been revealed.

I didn't know it was even an issue until yesterday. I read somthing like Gygax banished him/her. I read the Grey in the Hawk, or whatever it was called. Interesting article. If there is something interesting to this story, share, otherwise, it'll probably be of little relevance to those of us that weren't the boards back then.

He (?) was active on the old AOL boards and somewhat on Greytalk. Good grasp of GH-lore and a pretty good writer - posted some good stuff. Also *extremely* opinionated, anti-TSR for their handling of Greyahwk, and impatient with anything he considered foolishness. Nothing super interesting now, I guess. I was just curious.

For some reason, I think PSmedger and Iquander knew. Maybe Tamerlain as well. Not sure why I think that, though.

Ancient history - probably best to let it drop.

Yeah, I always figured Nitescreed was...someone else. Always figured QSam wasn't who she was represented to be either. And possibly Aria13. Roger Moore working those two so ...strongly... into Greyhawk always struck me as a little...weird.
