Yeah, I was flipping through my copy of D&DG earlier and realized that the art in that book by Roslof and others was so good, that if you threw out all the stats and just left the art and flavor text, it would still be an iconic book to me.

I heard about this a few days ago. He was certainly a good guy who left an impact on all of us.

Another tragic loss for fans of D&D. Sad

My best goes out to his family.

The picture of Thor - I copied that and colored it in September 1988. I have it in two sheet protectors and have it on the cover of my gaming binder. See's active use every week. I often think of scanning it in and laminating it so it doesn't get ruined.
Without his knowing he got me interested in learning to draw. Interest does not equate to ability.

Roslof did much of the artwork for Against the Giants and the Descent/Vault of the Drow modules, both interior black and white and color cover art. Those old pictures set in my mind the awesomeness that being an adventurer in Greyhawk could truly be.

The artwork of 3.5e is very good also, but it is a more complicated style. I am impressed by how inspiring Roslof's more simple-looking pieces could be. As Mortellan says in his Greyhawkery blog, less is more when it comes to Roslof. Smile

    A terrible, terrible loss.

I had a great night of gaming last night. My wife, who came to gaming only about 10 years ago, stood up at the end and said "that is a D&D game that I will remember." It was a session like we had in high school, when the images of the the 1st ed. DMG seemed to walk off the page, and the Giants could be seen waiting for us, like the pictures. For a few minutes we could see our characters, and maybe ourselves, as the Thor picture, heroes.

Not a bad run Mr. Roslof. Thanks. You helped make last night possible. Not a bad eulogy I don't think, though you deserve more eloquence.

One of my favorite pen & ink artists. Truly one of a kind.
