By Steel and Spell: Discussion

I thought I would start a discussion forum for my ongoing story By Steel and Spell. I hope to be able to post one snippet every few weeks as we go along. For those who haven't yet read it, here are the links:

and Part II

Sir Xaris asked me about the history of this story in his comments on Part II. Several years ago, I ran Expedition to Castle Ravenloft for a group of six players--all of whom were students at the University of Southern Mississippi at the time. Since then, they have all moved on to bigger and better things, so I don't get the chance to game with them any more.

The story itself is a fictionalized and dramatized account of their adventures in the Dread Domain of Count Strahd von Zarovich. However, it is based entirely upon their actions--and those the mists of time have blurred my memories of their dialogue, I am trying to stay true to how each of my character's behaved. It was a fun group with good-natured adults; I didn't have a single bad apple among them!

Anyway, this was before Pathfinder, and used the 3.5 D&D ruleset. The Warlock was an early attempt at the class I posted here on canonfire, lacking some things, but beefed up to make it comparable to real arcane spellcasters. Like my Pathfinder Warlock, the only invocations it has are for the eldritch blast, everything else comes from actual spells. Much like a bard.

The rest of the classes are pretty much standard 3.5, but we used the Turning as Damage rules instead of how turning really works (little did I know, at the time, that was what Pathfinder would change turning to). I did set Ravenloft in Ratik, and the players had a ball mixing old school Greyhawk with that wonderful feel of I6.

The game itself was a mix of the original I6 and Expedition. Simply because I hated some of the things they did in Expedition and changed it back to how Hickman originally wrote it!

If you have any comments, questions, or just want to grouse and grip (lol), feel free to post here. And I hope you enjoy my story.

I'm not a Ravenloft fan, myself. But I did spend my teenage years ('71 to '76) growing up in Hattiesburg, MS. I wasn't aware that any of "us" still lived there. Laughing

I started gaming in '86, when I was a freshman at Southern. Steve Baker was the guy that DMed and my friend John Scranage (may he rest in peace) was the one that introduced me to D&D. But they are all long gone now (either moved away, moved on, or passed on).
