Just wanted to make sure that I have the spell mechanics down for these two.

It seems that the only time a saving throw is permitted is if the items to be affected are magical in nature. I don't see it mentioned anywhere that a save is permitted if the targeted items are in the possession of somebody (as in normally the case for most spells)...or did I miss that point?

You have it right. It is funny when we see something simple, don't trust it, and then begin to over think it. Sometimes things really are just that simple. Laughing

Yeah, I was really puzzled b/c most of the time spells grant a saving throw if cast on an item or object that is being used or held.
