I was in a whimsical mood tonight and from it came this Flan Saga!!! Enjoy!
The Lost
We were born under starlit skies
Upon the plains and the rivers wide
The mountains high and valleys low
We are the Flan, this is our home.
From the Auld we did learn the way
To tend the land and keep the beasts at bay
Our kings were wise, our lords were true
Our will was strong and so we grew
And then It came upon a winter's night
The Doom of Man, this Vile Primal Fright
And it did Rage and it did howl
We drew our swords and stood our ground
The war was waged against this sibilant foe
This nameless fiend who sought to bring us low
Kingdoms fought and kingdoms died
We knew of naught would turn the tide.
So Wizards wrought and the priests did pray
The forge fires burned both night and day
And when it came to end us all
In Lyon's Trap the Fiend did fall
This primal Fear, this faceless doom of man
Can hide no more nor walk the land
Amon-Ibhor is now its name
We Wrought well, the Faceless Framed
So when you walk and you sow our land
and know naught of our saving hand
We are the lost and the forgotten few
We are the Flan, you never knew
A footnote of sorts: This of course is in support of my ' Lost golden age of the Flan' Theory
I don't know many of the references, but I'm guessing the beast could have been Demogorgon for two reasons: 1) the poem uses the adjective 'sibilant' in reference to it and it is frequently called The Sibilant Best; 2) an old source (maybe an article in an old OJ) talked about how the troglodytes (who worship demogorgon) used to be dominant on the surface of the Flanaess in ancient times, but were driven beneath the ground by the Flan and elves, if I recall correctly.
I'd posted a while back on an idea equating a Flan kingdom in the Rakers with a roughly Inca like empire. One idea I was toying with was that the ruler (Inca) was an offspring of Pelor, and represented virtue. This empire fought a centuries long war with some kind of demonic horde or evil necromancer or another undefined baddie. One by one the imperial cities fell to the evil, inflicting horrible losses, but each loss diminishing the kingdom. To save the last remnants of his people, the last Inca battled the evil, and sacrificed himself to defeat it. With his death, the enemy was defeated, but the pathetic remnant of his people left the last city, and became mountain nomads of the Rakers. My plan was to have a Flan PC be his descendant, and there would be an adventure pathway to find the lost capital, uncover the secrets, and re-unite the scattered people in their homeland.
Is your idea for all Flan to be part of this war, or was it a select group or in one area only?
Given that my campaign is set in Nyrond I was aiming this for the Flan of the Central Flaness rather than all the Flan. The repercussions though would have been felt throughout the width and breath of the Flan Culture
I do like your idea and think the poem would fit well there.
