Is there a complete list of the layers of the Abyss and who controls them.

    Thanks well in advance

    Yes

    Yes, I control them all.
    Wink

Actually, I don't think there is, but we have a thread running where we are taking them one at a time, naming them, and providing a description. Look for it in the general discussion section.

There use to be 666 layers (I think -- source?).

There isn't a complete listing out there and I think that's good for three reasons:

      1) It gives the DM creative license to populate the layers as he/she sees fit.

      2) Such sketchy information supports a realistic degree of ignorance regarding the Abyss.

      3) A complete listing would imply a certain degree of stability and permanence that would simply not be the case, here especially.

    Regards,

There are some planescape site sout there on the net, listing much.
    Here`s one:

And of course Rip Van Wormer`s site:

There`s a nice listing of some with the more famous rulers on the Necromancer boards with more information:

1st edition Players Handbook... and that was a just a number arbitrarily picked by mortals who could not comprehend an infinate number of infanatly large layers existing...

As has been previously stated, the layers of the Abyss are effectively unknown (even to demons) and possibly infinate.

The number 666 was picked first because there are certainly hundreds, but apparently not obviously thousands of accessable ones. Second, and more importantly, the number 666 has a special place in Christian mythology, being "The Number of the Beast" in Revelations, which gives some clue as to the identity of evil. Thus, since the Abyss is a bad place, you give it 666 because it is evil. Subsequent renderings of D&D have removed this, as well as other obvious references to christian mythology (such as the word demon), and just call it The Infinate Layers of the Abyss.

Note that Lolth´s Web is layer 66, and other permutations of the number 6 are often used in D&D as a code for evil, while 7, 77, and 777 code for good.

Perhaps Tzeilos would like to inform us more? IIRC he knows a bit about numerology.
