New Unearthed Arcana - Greyhawk Initiative!

    Quote:
As anyone who’s been playing Dungeons & Dragons long enough knows, there’s more than one way to get into a fight.

Mike Mearls introduces an alternative initiative system, inspired by AD&D and the journey to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin—the birthplace of D&D—for Gary Con 2017. While the initiative rules in fifth edition D&D are great for keeping the action moving and being easy to use at the table, the Greyhawk initiative variant takes a different approach. These rules add complexity, but with the goal of introducing more drama to combat.

Umm....its interesting to see that Mike Mearls have an interest for Greyhawk, and that he attended GaryCon 2017, but this alternative Initiative rule complicate combat in my personal opinion. He says he got inspiration in both the GaryCon and the old AD&D system. I have limited experience with AD&D and null with the convention. Whats your opinion?

I find it interesting, and the rules are not just about initiative. They also encompass the actions a character takes during the whole of a round, so it is an alteration of how action occurs during a round. For those who are used to more complex game editions/RPG systems, I think it could be implemented well enough; especially considering the overall simplicity that is a key feature of 5E. Definitely not something for the more casual gaming group though.
