    Dorgha Torgu and Stillsong

In Oerth Journal #12 (Spring, 2001), Gary Gygax described a "fallen deity" named Dorgha Torgu, who had once been the greater Baklunish god of "Material Dimensions, Material Elements" until he helped precipitate the Rain of Colorless Fire, and as a result he was reduced to quasi-deity status and outcast from the company of other gods. He now wanders, vainly looking for that which will redeem him in the eyes of the greater gods. "There is a means by which the outcast can restore his lost repute, but he must manage the matter without assistance from any of deital sort."

In Monster Mythology by Carl Sargent (1992) is detailed Stillsong. "The god has devoted himself to self-purification through trials and rituals suffered in the various elements of creation; in water he has been drowned and reborn, in earth crushed and regrown, in fire burned and purified, and now the god has all but finished his dissolution in the element of air and is reforming himself before he presents himself to a final judgement of the Creator Gods."

What do you think, is Carl Sargent's Stillsong the same entity as Gary Gygax's Dorgha Torgu, perhaps further along in his quest for redemption than he was as Gygax described him? Obviously they were created separately, but there are quite a few similarities.

I love the idea, but at first blush I think Stillsong is too beneficent to be Dorgha Torgu. Do you think that’s part of his penance? Because of the great Evil he wrought, he’s now Neutral Good instead of Neutral?

Perhaps Dorgha Torgu / Stillsong "has devoted himself to self-purification through trials and rituals suffered in the various elements of creation", but what if this is somehow connected to the origins of the Temple of Elemental Evil? Maybe the site of his trials became the foundation for others to build upon both figuratively and literally. Perhaps his abandoned tests remain for others to endure or exploit.

When sites such as the ToEE appear in game and story, I wonder why that spot? Ley-lines? Previous divine touch?

I really like this blending. Thanks, Ragson for being a muse.

Gygax's description of Dorgha Torgu does suggest his redemption may be found through good acts:

    Gary Gygax wrote:
In roaming through the world, Dorgha Torgu helps those who seek to reverse evil things, to aid those who have been wronged, and to otherwise help those suffering injustices. This he does from remorse, not because he believes such a course will restore him to his lost status. Of course, it is surely some such humble act that will set him on the course of attaining that which he seeks.

His alignment is noted in Oerth Journal #12 as neutral with good tendencies, but he may be on the path to true good.
