Re: Abraxus (Score: 2, Informative) by grodog on Sat, August 11, 2001 (User Info | Send a Message) http://www.greyhawkonline.com/grodog/greyhawk.html | Abraxus was listed among the Rulers of the Abyss in AD&D's MM2, page 35.
According to Lewis Spence's Encyclopedia of Occultism and Gustav Davidson's A Dictionary of Angels Abraxus (aka Abraxis, Abrasax, Abracax, etc.) was associated with second-century Gnostics who claimed Abraxus as their supreme god, and believed that the name held power and mystery because it was formed from the seven Greek letters that form the number 365 (the number of days in the year). The word "abracadabra" descends from his name. Both sources mention that worship of Abraxus may have originated in ancient Egypt as well.
An old DM of mine from Penn State (Allen Ruch) had used Abraxus as the progenitor of all Demonkind, which I took and tweaked for my own game. Allen and I cross-pollinated ideas about demons in particular; I use his version of Alrunes, he used my version of Obox-ob, etc. We also tweaked each other's write-ups for our own games.
IMC, I have set Abraxus as one of the original six progentintors of demonkind, but he is not the only one; he was, however, the most prolific, having fathered many demon lords, including (from among detailed demon princes) Demogorgon, Graz'zt, and Vaprak (god of ogres from D&DG).
I'm sure you'll see more Excerpts from the Demonomicon of Iggwilv in the future :-)
