I tend to portray my Dryads (and other fey creatures) as being more social than the game presents them. This also couples with a sort of loneliness these creatures feel, seeing the camaraderie and friendship of the elves and humans that pass near their groves. Curious about what types of interaction may exist beyond the trees, they sometimes make friendships with peaecefull, goodly people.

    As for the Green Dragon...
well, Aramanthyn, the Green Death of the Dreadwood, isn't your typical green dragon. Although he does so for selfish and tyrannical reasons (its his forest!), he nutures the forest and its (non-human) inhabitants. It is said by the elves of the wood that Aramanthyn knows every leaf and every stone, and hears the whispering babble of every stream. Druids and rangers of the area wisely revere him, and even consult him from time to time when a crisis arises. It is, in this case, not out of the ordinary for a sylvan creature to have a 'friendship' with the dragon, who is revered almost as a hero-god and lord protector of their homeland.

For those who, like TSR, are uneasy about bringing up suicide, you could easily replace that part of the plot with something like 'he died of a broken heart, clutching the mask which he so dearly loved, it is for that reason we buried him with it, we couldn't bring ourselves to deprive his spirit of its one true love.' Whatever works for you and your players.
