There is the Greyhawk University of Magic Arts which is overseen by the Greyhawk Wizards' Guild. There is no formula for gaining xp's for attending the school. Under 1e/2e rules I required mages to visit such a school(or a guild) when training up to a new level where a new level of spells was gained. Barring that they must find an instructor on their own. _________________ - Moderator/Admin (in some areas)/Member -
A quote from the 2e AD&D "The City of Greyhawk" boxed set, "Greyhawk: Gem of the Flanaess" booklet, page 5:
"Greyhawk the Learning Center
The Free city of Greyhawk is the home of the most prestigious school of magic across the Flanaess. The distinctive pyramid of the University of Magic Arts is one of the Free City’s most distinctive landmarks. Greyhawk’s colleges are among the most respected in the known world. And its libraries are the destinations of scholars from all corners of the continent.
The Greyhawk University of Magical Arts, under the principle leadership of Kieren Jalucien (see Ch 3 FFF for a full description of this NPC) is the college selected by the most qualified apprentice mages- those who can afford the tuition, that is.
The “Wizard School,” as the university is often called, is overseen by the Guild of Wizardry. Its students work hard, and are subject to harsh discipline. By and large the apprentices have time for little but their studies.”
I’d say that sounds pretty formal. Not too many keggers going on in the non-existent frat houses at this school. Wizards like to be taken very seriously- it is part of their mystique.
That is just an example of the City of Greyhawk though. There is a formal wizard school in Furyondy that focuses on battle magic(perhaps it is part of the College of War?), and others which escape me at the moment. Hopefully other folks will chime in with more info on the other citys'/nations' wizard schools. _________________ - Moderator/Admin (in some areas)/Member -

No doubt. However, it bears no resemblance to the Schools of Magic on Krynn, that were part of the original topic.

I'm sure there have been additonal such schools published since Jason's index was last updated in 2003, but at least that's a start! _________________ Allan Grohe
https://www.greyhawkonline.com/grodog/greyhawk.html
https://grodog.blogspot.com/
