The Game must go on...

Cool In my humble opinion...

The game must go on. Exclamation

I figure as long as we continue to play D&D (AD&D), whatever version decided upon, continue to venture into the lands of Greyhawk, and continue to teach his game to others, then the legacy of Gary Gygax will continue...he will continue.

“A scholars ink lasts longer than a martyrs blood”
(I believe an old Irish saying)

So... Good gaming all, may all your dice roll in your favor.

Yeah...

I guess that's how Gary Gygax would like it to be. That what he created goes beyond him and almost acquire a life by itself.
And franckly, that's what happened over those long years... We just have to see what is done here on Canonfire!

As long as GreyHawk will be played, EGG will be remembered. but IMO, GreyHawk is not his legacy but more likely a creation which he nurtured qnd then let live its life.

Long live GreyHawk !

Gygax's legacy lives on in many different things-

*D&D(whichever edition or campaign world you play in)

*Movies(a few of which are not too hideously bad, but only a few Wink )

*Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000(many of whose authors were influenced by D&D)

*Blizzard/World of Warcraft(for the same reason)

*Innumerable writers and publishers of RPG material(once again, all influenced by D&D)

*Innumerable people who work on fantasy themed console and PC games.

*And, of course, people like us who gather at fan sites that celebrate what he created; whether that be D&D, Greyhawk, Castles & Crusades, Legendary Journeys, or whatever.

Well said. I agree whole heartedly. It would be a waste not to. So long as we as DMs and players are enjoying our campaigns, who cares what edition it's played in. Enjoyment is all that matters. #1 rule in every book should be, have fun.

I agree, Greyhawk is Greyhawk in any edition thanks to Gygax. His vision was to not merely create a world that everyone used as a backdrop, but one in which each player and DM could contribute to it's development in his or her own way. The point was not to create a world, but to create the frame for a multiverse that could continue to expand as old players left and new players arrived. The fact that diversity is not only accepted but very much encouraged is why Greyhawk will continue to endure with or without Wizards of the Coast's official continuance.

Does anyone know what Gary's opinion of Greyhawk had been over the past years that he was away from it publicly? Did he know about this place or others that continued to build on his vision? Did he still have a version of Greyhawk that he developed on his own for personal use?

Gary felt little need to grieve or be angry over the loss of his beloved Greyhawk in recent years. It simply wasn't worth the time and energy for him, desiring instead to place such energy and emotion in the projects he was presently developing and overseeing.

That being said, he did enjoy running portions of his original Greyhawk campaign using the original D&D rules as found in those three little brown books -- with just a few house rules.

He was aware that there were legions of GH fans out there, and he was happy they enjoyed the campaign, and if you search the archives of his Q&A sessions at ENWorld, you'll find he answered hundred of questions about the campaign setting.
