Pictures from Isle of the Ape

We recently had the pleasure of reliving this old classic with 3.5 rules, so I decided to treat my players by turning my game table into the island. Just thought I'd share with you good folks.

Dude, that is very, very cool! I wish I had time to make my game table look like that.

I only have one question: where'd you find the ape?

Thanks! The ape was the King Kong action figure from McFarlane Toys' Movie Maniacs line. I think I picked it up for around $40. It was the perfect size for the game, the only problem was the metal shackles were attached and couldn't come off.

The game was great. We pulled a marathon 12 - hour session and had a great time. To make better use of the great gates, I staged another kawibusa attack on the group, which they survived. They moved into the island interior (being harassed by dinosaurs the whole way) and by 2:30 in the morning I could tell my players were getting restless. The heat and disease factors were wearing them down, so I prematurely had a chance encounter happen with Oonga. This was much to the party's advantage, however, because it was out in the wide open where they had a lot of room to maneuver. Oonga took care of the ground PCs but had lost about 3/4 of his h.p. so he fled. The party, down to half their numbers and depleted of most of their potent spells, wisely did not give chase and instead recovered the dead and wounded. That is where we left off and will continue this weekend.

I think the second battle with Oonga will be much tougher, as it will likely happen in his lair where there is not a lot of maneuvering room and the terrain is difficult in places.

In case you're intersted, there is a pretty good 3rd edition (not 3.5) conversion of this module for free here:
http://www.superdan.net/download/WG6.pdf

I found his Oonga build too weak for my group, so I did one up in the epic forums here:

Cheers Smile

I tried my hand at converting IotA once, but ran out of time and gave up. Wish I'd seen that file before. Or the thread you linked to. Crap.

Wow.
I can think of nothing else to say except that is simply fraught with awesome. That's a game crew that I would love to be a member of. You guys are great.

Ya know, Icarus, I've heard that a lot of great sculptors (and game-table designers) got their start drawing maps and fantasy characters....

That is beyond awesome - extremely cool.

How did your players react when you unveiled it?

Well ... I can't say that I would be mad about having a carreer like that ... and Lord knows that famous fella like Michelangelo and Donatello and Carravagio did sculpting. I am not certaint hat I am talented in that area, but i keep telling myself that one of these days I am going to at least learn how to paint miniatures.

Laughing But then, I've been saying that for at least 15 out of my 25 years worth of gaming. Shocked Shocked Embarassed

Hey - anyone can paint miniatures, it's learning to paint them well that's hard. Happy Looking at some of my early efforts... ::shudder::

And now, I think I drink too much caffeine to paint minis. Probably have to get bifocals, too. Hard to do details with shaky hands, especially when you can't see them. Getting old sucks.

They weren't completely surprised because this is the third set-piece I've done for our games on this scale (I fear they're getting used to this), but they loved it nonetheless. Honestly, this is as much for me as it is for them. As a DM and longtime fan of this particular module, I've always wanted to re-create it for gameplay like this. When you see your miniature next to the great wall or Oonga, it really helps give you a good perspective of size in the D&D game and makes for a more immersive experience. Lot o' work, though!

Here are some shots from our game last night, where our heroes were commisioned by the tribe of the Bird-People to eliminate the "great lizard in the valley" in exchange for their cooperation. Unfortunately for the heroes, the "great lizard" turned out to be an advanced gargantuan T Rex as well as an advanced gargantuan Spinosaurus.

Lol! So true. I paint from time to time with varying degrees of success. I use a high-powered magnifying glass that attaches to my paint table, that helps a fair bit when it comes to the tiny details. Now if only I could get my blending to look better...

It is great fun to run large prop-enhanced encounters like these. I've done so myself a few times.

The pterodactyls are the best. Laughing Cool

What I'd most like to see is a tutorial on how to make such set pieces. I've long since given up on ever being able to paint minis, but I think I might be able to put together a set or two if I knew how.
