The Plane of Time

I'm DMing the Mushroom Caverns of the Hellspike Prison, where the big bad is a beholder. I used Grodog's rules for randomizing beholder eye rays and one of them was plane shift.

In the battle (which the rest of the party retreated from), my girlfriend's character failed his save and was sent to the Plane of Time.

Help.

Has there ever been an adventure set on the Plane of Time?

Is there anything more than a couple sentences written about this place anywhere?

What would be some things this character would experience on the Plane of Time? What is there to do there? Where is there to go?

Years ago, we had a chronomancer character, but even he never went to the Plane of Time.

Do Istus and Cyndor dwell on the Plane of Time? and do we known anything about their realms? What about Tsolorandril?

I'm fishing for anything here. I have two weeks until the next game.

There was a Chronomancer book written for 2e that has information about the Plane of Time. No adventures, though.

edited to add: oops, missed the bit about having a chronomancer character. I guess you know about that book.

Try this -

https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Demiplane_of_Time

Despite the Faerun reference, this is a good resource.

And this -

thanks for the suggestions, everyone!

Does anyone have any ideas on incorporating realms or agents of Cyndor, Istus, and/or Tsolorandril? These deities are so obscure it feels like this would be the perfect time to incorporate them.

I believe Istus is served by noble time elementals, as originally presented in Monster Manual II. Now’s the time to use them. Wink

My best idea so far is to crib from the last 10 minutes of 2001 A Space Odyssey and have the character perceiving & encountering other versions of himself and then perhaps becoming those versions.

Or something.

I would love to work in a divine realm, esp. of Cyndor or Tsolorandril, both woefully neglected deities.

I'm glad to hear that you used my variant beholder abilities, edumundscott!---that makes my dark DM heart beam with malicious pride :D

There's not a lot about the Plane of Time in Jason's index, but here are some quick thoughts:

- you might want to check out Lewis Pulsipher's Timelord NPC class from Dragon #65; I've expanded on this quite a bit, as one of my brothers played a Timelord as his primary PC during our high school and college campaigns
- the Lenard Lakofka Archive has access to Len's as-yet-unpublished writeups for Cyndor and the other Unknown and Common gods of Greyhawk, so keep an eye out for that appearing in 2025
- for gaming, you've already heard about Chronomancer, and IIRC there is some info about time domains in the 2e Tome of Magic too; Rob Kuntz's Lost City of the Elders plays with time (among other variables) in its environs, and you might find some play accounts from there useful, as with Guy Fullerton's summary at https://unvisiblecitadel.blogspot.com/2013/03/lost-city-of-elders-out-of-box-play.html as well as the unpublished manuscript in his El Raja Key Archive at https://www.tlbgames.com/collections/archive/products/el-raja-key-archive-dvd-standard-edition; Randy Richards wrote some time travel scenarios that took PCs back to the heyday of the Suel Imperium that might be worth digging up; there have been many RPGs devoted to time travel (see these 2 reddit threads for some suggestions: https://www.reddit.com/r/rpg/comments/52dz0j/any_time_travel_rpgs/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/rpg/comments/5xvca2/time_travel_rpg/ but they're not comprehensive); I also included a Time Elemental as a keystone encounter in my Jennell Jayquays tribute adventure, "The Roundabout Level" (soon to be published in her Return to Perinthos commemorative fundraiser project)
- if you want some fictional inspirations, check out: Robert Holdstock's _Where the Time Winds Blow_ (which has significantly shaped my imagining of the Riftcanyon as a planar and perhaps temporal fallout site), the Time Wars series by Simon Hawk (time cops across history), Fritz Leiber's Hugo-Award-Winning _Big Time_ novel and follow-up short story collection _Changewar (another time wars concept), and of course the timeline crossovers in Moorcock's Eternal Champion cycles of novels
- if you want some musical inspirations, check out Michael Moorcock's work with Hawkwind, in particular their 1975 masterpiece, _Warrior on the Edge of Time_ (and also MM's Blue Oyster Cult classic, "Veteran of the Psychic Wars", known perhaps best from the first Heavy Metal film)

and in addition Jason's index did mention these resources (I filtered in Excel on the keyword "time" in case you'd like to search on other terms):
- Castle at the Edge of Time in OP1 Tales of the Outer Planes (my general impression was that this was not a good collection, but I don't recall if this particular scenario was worthwhile or not)
- Istus' plane is listed as "Uncertain" in Dragon #69, and that carries over into the 1983 boxed set
- Chronos is the "Master of Time" and appears in Gygax's _Dance of Demons_ Gord novel, and might offer some inspiration too
- the spell "Drawmij's Handy Timepiece" appears in GA

I'm somewhat surprised there aren't more time-specific magic items or spells captured in the index, like Time Stop, for example. Something to ponder for future additions!

Lastly, the novel and film _Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban_ features the Time Turner magic item, which might be fun to include in your adventure, perhaps: https://harrypotter.fandom.com/wiki/Time-Turner

Allan.

Grodog, many thanks for the extensive response!

I hadn't known your roundabout level would be included in the Return to Perinthos project; I have backed that, based on your level alone.

Have you seen the Lakota Common deities? Any chance of a preview of his vision of Cyndor? (I'm quite interested to see this manuscript.)

Can anyone recall if "Chronos" from the Gord books was a New Infinities version of Cyndor or Lender or a completely separate being?

Thank you, that’s very kind, and I’m sure Jennell’s family will appreciate your support! :)

I have, and will be sharing the manuscript content with the archive team this weekend. I don’t think we have a specific timeline for sharing the materials yet, since we’re still noodling through publication options.

edit: I just remembered that I created an Amulet of Time at http://www.canonfire.com/cf/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=268 which may also pique your interest.

Krista Siren’s NIPI/Gord:Greyhawk names translation page at https://greyhawkonline.com/gordmain/gordmisc/#translation doesn’t include Chronos, so I’m not sure without going back to the books to check.

Allan.

My (dim) recollection is that Chronos is one of a trio of greater gods—or possibly even higher order beings—that are in the background of the novels.

Reviewing another page of Gord's Greyhawk, didn't uncover anything relevant to your query. I think you might be right that Gygax provided pseudonyms for Lendor, Istus, and a third being in the form of Chronos, Lady Balance?, and ??

Sorry, my copies of the books are in storage (in another state), so I can't access them.
