Moon deities?

Are there any deities of the moon in GH (that aren't Olman)?

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Also no but ridiculously longer with tons of suggestions and background to support adapting various existing powers to cover the moon.

The closest you get is Pholtus, who regulates the sun and the moon.
Next closest but not really is the Elven power Sehanine Moonbow.

A couple, working from the LGJ#3 list:

- Pholtus is sun and moons
- Sehanine Moonbow is full moons

It’s a gaps that demands to be filled, in my mind ;)

Allan.

Yeah. I never really thought about it before, but a player asked about moon deities and I realized I couldn't think of one. It's an odd omission.

Now I'm trying to decide if there ought to be one or two.

  • Apocatequil (though Olman, as you noted)
  • Corellon Larethian’s symbol is a blue quarter-moon.
  • Lendor’s symbol is a scepter with a crescent moon, full moon, and 14 stars (representing his pantheon).
  • As mentioned, Pholtus is canonically the Oeridian god of the sun and moon(s).
  • As mentioned, Sehanine the Moonbow is really the olven moon goddess.
  • Shargaas’ symbol is a red crescent moon.
  • Syrul’s faith observes holy days on the full moons.

Tsolorandril would be concerned with Oerth's lunar relationships as they effect his tides.

Celestian's AOC includes all celestial bodies.

Raxivort has interest here if you maintain his nineties' connection to were-creatures, instituted because TSR policy prevented Sargent from referencing Xvarts, which were out-of-print at the time.

IMC, Lendor is the moon deity for Suel, Pholtus for Oeridians, Obad-Hai for Flan, and Xan Yae for Baklunish.

I developed the astronomers in UK4 When A Star Falls as a fringe cult of Pholtus, fled from the Pale and sheltering in the mountains of Tenh. Would recommend this material for anyone developing priests of celestial deities or martial-arts monks in a western setting.

I go with Ehlonna=Luna and Sehanine=Celene. Note the similarity in names! Ehlonna's unicorn horn symbol doubles as the horn of a lunar crescent.

Rao has some dominion over the moons, too—he created them (along with the sun) in Velunese myths.

There should be. Although everyone else who commented on this thread seems to have more knowledge than me.

Cegilune is isn't she? Although like any named so far the exact relationship is questionable.

Coincidentally, one of my players is returning to our Greyhawk campaign, bringing a Pholtus cleric to the table tonight.

That sparked some interesting ideas about Pholtus, riffing off the discussion here, the Jim Holloway illustration in Dragon #68, and events to date in the campaign.

I like this idea. The OP made me think of Luna and Celene immediately, but they aren’t deities AFAIK. Which then begged the question: who are they? Or at least, where did their names originate? Can anyone shed some (moon)light on this?

Cheers!

Don't forget the role of the moons in baneful magic such as Lycanthropy, the Blood Moon, etc. This is why I make use of Cegilune.

Remember that Oerth is at the center of the system. All the other planets could be considered moons of Oerth - though the term "moons" just applies to the two closest bodies that orbit it.

The -lune suffix suggests Luna, specifically.

I've never seen Pholtus as the deity _of_ the Sun and Moons. Instead, he set them in their paths and regulates their behavior. IMC, eclipses are times when the Sun and Moons briefly escape his control.

Cyndor (IMC called Cyndro Lunaea) is the patron of the celestial lights. Luna, Celene, and the Sun are all guided in their paths by solars.
