It has been a while since my last query, but I am reaching out for some input regarding this NPC. Jaikor features somewhat prominently in my campaign since my player has a crusader of Heironeous. (Un?)fortunately the source guides are rather scant on information regarding Jaikor.
We know that he is 5th/7th level fighter/priest at the time of 582/583 CY from the City of Greyhawk boxed set and is in charge of the Sanctum at this time. By the time The Adventure Begins source guide comes around, it is 591 and Jaikor, still alive (though greatly wounded) has risen to 10th lvl as a priest. The only stats given are 16 in Str, Wis, and Char.
Here is what I would like people to offer, based on their own interpretations, or what you have gleaned from source material:
1) How old is he (from 582/583) at the time of the City of Greyhawk boxed set? Nothing is indicated, and I would like a general idea.
2) From where does he come? Is he a local from the City? The domain? Or is he from a neighboring country like the Shield Lands/Furyondy? And if so, why did he immigrate to the City of Greyhawk?
3) We know he started his career as a warrior. Was he a soldier? A mercenary? A guardsman, etc?
4) At some point in his career he transitioned to a cleric. What was the backstory on that? And how did he become, at a relatively middling level, the primary and chief cleric of the Sanctum?
All suggestions, perspectives, and opinions are welcome!
I don't have anything canonical, though it's possible (but unlikely) I lifted some of this from Living Greyhawk adventures; but here's what I've added or incorporated to him for my Age of Worms campaign (currently moving into CY 597):
• badly wounded Battle of Critwall under Franz Torkeep
• shockingly excited by talk of politics (IMC he's helping PCs arrange an attack on Alhaster to reclaim Redhand for the Shield Lands when Zeech is overthrown, to prevent Iuz from moving in some clerical puppet)
• loves military music
• ally of Cptn General Nurev & Barch Hillclimber, deputy constable River Quarter, many city watch officers
• bond with enslaved people & refugees from Shield Lands
Perhaps not much more than you have, but that's what I'm playing with . . .
I have him as middle-aged, maybe 50ish. In 1E/2E, he started as a fighter, reached mid-level, and then restarted his career as a 1st-level cleric. I don’t want him to be too young.
Absent other information, I assume everyone presented in the City of Greyhawk boxed set is native to the domain. GotF, p. 3, tells us that 80% of the population are native Greyhawkers.
As a Lawful Good Heironean, I doubt he was a mercenary. He probably served in the City Watch.
I don’t think he woke one morning and decided to become a cleric. It probably was his calling all along. I play 1E, so I made him an 8th-level cleric (the minimum to establish a place of worship) instead of 7th, but the faith of Heironeous isn’t particularly large or popular in the cosmopolitan and ethically grey Free City.
