Greyhawk Images

A while ago, there was a thread which featured photos of places throughout the world, and what place it could be on Oerth. (BTW, if anyone could find it, give it a bump. It's a thread which could use resurrecting).

Somewhat inspired by that, I offer the first image for Who, What, Where, and When from the D&D 3 Hero Builder's Guide:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hero_Builder%27s_Guidebook#/media/File:Hero_Builders_Guidebook_coverthumb.jpg

Note: Greyhawk deities were the generic fallback for D&D 3, so the artist might not have actually had Greyhawk lore in mind, but we'll just roll with it. Wink

We have a priestess of Istus, an elderly ruler or general who is badly wounded, perhaps mortally, and a man holding her standard and his sword. They are next to the corpse of a creature that is either dragon-like, or one from the infernal planes. There seem to be a few flying creatures in the background, the same species as the corpse, I assume, although I could be wrong. The background seems to put this image around twilight (sunrise or sunset?).

Assuming the coprse and flying creatures are from the lower planes, that's unusual for a battle in the Flanaess, but not during the 584-586 time frame (between the time that both Ivid and Iuz called on fiends to assist their armies and the Flight of the Fiends). That would presumably make the trio enemies of either the Great Kingdom or Iuz, but that doesn't exactly narrow things down that much.

The man with the standard seems to be a barbarian, not necessarily in the D&D 3 to D&D 5 sense (i.e. a berserker), but at least in the AD&D1 class or AD&D2 fighter kit sense (or, for AD&D2, maybe the savage kit). His style of dress doesn't look Wolf or Tiger Nomad. He looks a little dark to be pure Suel, so that would probably rule out a Cold Barbarian, Amedian, or Hepmonalander. Maybe a Rover or Stonefister? Or from some other area? I assumed he was a bodyguard, but if so, for the priest, or for the old leader? Maybe he's an equal companion of the priestess—he looks a little young to be an equal of the man, but who knows? Or maybe he's the older man's son? Or could they all be related?

Istus is a Bakluni deity, but has a general appeal, so that's that's not a definitive indicator for her identity, but we can probably rule out Scarlet Brotherhood. 😉I think it would place the scenemore to the west than the east i.e., against Iuz rather than the Great Kingdom. Can the priestess heal the old man? Is she out of spells? Or maybe the man's wounds are of a nature beyond "Cure" spells (e.g. poison or some other effect)? Or maybe the Lady of Fate has just decided it's the old boy's Time to Go?

I assume that the old guy killed the beast they're next to. I'd think that a senior-ranking guy would wear heavier armor than scale. Maybe he's some sort of barbarian (AD&D sense) who might be loathe to wear plate? But he seems more heavily armored than I'd think any Rover would be. Placing him is the hardest part.

Any ideas?

Your take on the picture sounds good. I will suggest that if the dead/dying older man is a powerful leader, that scale armor may very well be made of dragon hide which, according to some rules editions, could be of far better protective power and weight/maneuverability than highly magical full plate armor - if it was made (and even magic'd) from the hide of a great wyrm.

Four mercenary captains. Each is attempting to convince the Castellan of the Keep on the Borderlands to hire his troop for a lucrative mission that has been posted near the well in Fountain Square.

-For some reason, I could see the jpeg yesterday, but can't today. But IIRC, we have:

1) ‎Cold Barbarian (Frost, Snow,  Ice, or maybe Xeai, from the area north of Blackmoor);

2) Generic armored fighter who could be from anywhere between Sterich, Bissel, or Veluna in the west to Ratik or the Great Kingdom in the east (i.e., western European);

3) Bakluni of the "khan" type i.e. a Wolf or Tiger Nomad, or maybe a Paynim or Ulli?

4) Elf archer. I didn't notice evidence of spellcasting ability, so probably not a High Elf, but that could be almost anywhere.

Is this image from Return to the Keep? I don't have it. I know you place it somewhere in the Vesve (I place where the Jewel meets the Handmaiden).

BTW, is PHP Nuke an issue for anyone else?

These are good specifics. Smile

I believe it is from the D&D Expert Set.

Yes. I have to refresh each page on the Canonfire! website several times to get them to appear.

From the AD&D DMG:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/8c/DungeonMasterGuide4Cover.jpg

...I remember reading somewhere that the magic user in Mordenkainen, the fighter is Robilar, and that the woman was Tasha on a trip to the Elemental Plane of Fire (continued on the back of the DMG's cover), which makes sense, except for Tasha (wrong generation, unless she came back).
