How do I start playing 1e?

Hello,
It's finally happened.
I, Ivid the Magnificient, have collected more old D&D material than I have for 3e. Now, the next logical step for me is to spare me that conversion work and to start playing 1e.
Now, the dumbass that I am, I let a very cheap 1e DM Guide slip through my fingers just yesterday.
Now my question is, is there some kind SRD for 1e out there on the web, where I can look basic things up? Or someone who offers 1e character sheets to download?
Maybe you could be so friendly to recommend me a good message board for that, too.

Check out SVGames. They have PDFs of all the old 1st Edition products for sale.

As for character sheets, RPGNow.com has them in PDF form for $4.95.

I haven't purchased from RPGNow, but I've used SVGames to plug a few holes in my Greyhawk collection (namely The Marklands and Iuz the Evil) and can recommend them. The download process is a bit of a pain, but that's a minor thing.

The Mad Irishman has a very nice free AD&D1e character sheet pdf on his website, as well as a variant sheet with the optional information from Oriental Adventures:

The guys at Dragonsfoot also have some nice free sheets, and a whole range of supplemental forms like equipment inventory sheets, magic item forms, party record sheets for the DM and a lot more. They've also got a ton of cool adventures and a couple AD&D1e sourcebooks (two new monster manual type tomes and some collections of optional PC/NPC classes).

There's two forums I recommend for the AD&D1e fan (Basic D&D and 2e fans as well):

The same guys who host all the files I mentioned before, they have a pretty active forum with a nice showing for the old school editions. They've got a Greyhawk forum too, but it's extremely focused on old school, Gygax era GH, keep that in mind if you venture in there.

Not so busy these days, but still a great resource. Lots of other old school gaming topics there too.
http://www.mortality.net has an "Out of Print D&D" forum as well, but it tends to focus mostly on AD&D2e. There's some decent chatter there though, so it's worth a look.

I almost forgot, while you're over at Dragonsfoot, be sure and download the pdfs of Footprints EZine. It's the only ezine (that I'm aware of anyway) dedicated to AD&D1e, though they do throw in some odds and ends from Basic D&D and such now and then. Another cool resource.

One last thought:
If you don't mind a little silly humor, or have the time to strip it out, the Hackmaster rpg stuff is perfectly suited to adapting to AD&D1e. They've added a bit mechanically to the rules, but the basics are derived straight from AD&D1e, so using the material is simple.

While I have currently A LOT of 3e games running, 1e may be of use for my *pet projects*, the I series and ToEE...
I am not that pdf type, I need the books... *Will check on ebay... How could I be such a dork to let a 1e DMG for 6€ slip through my fingers!?*
Ah, Hackmaster... Haven't they just released a parody of WoG some time ago?
I tried *Robinloft* a few years ago, but that was really *weird*...
Any more useful ideas for me 1e n00b?

Hey Ivid, do you have the 2E PHB? 1E is essentially 2E without proficiencies. (Or with them if you count WSG, DSG and OA). And some changes in certain classes.
I got me the 1E manuals for a further indepth look while playing 2E myself. A 1E PHB or DMG should be quite cheap to get from ebay.co.uk. (for better postage costs.) Or get a lot with some other hardbacks from ebay.com. Should be cheap enough.
I do have a german 1E DMG by FSV for sale if you're interested though...

Your local library should be able to interlibrary loan a copy of the 1st ed. AD&D Dungeon Masters Guide. I know there aren't many libraries still out there with AD&D material on their shelves, but they are out there. Although there is plenty of interesting stuff to browse in the 1st ed. AD&D DMG, I think you'll find you could get by with photocopying 10 pages or less from it.

My problem is that I live in Germany - D&D, apart from a bit Dragonlance and the Realms *shudders* is almost completely unknown here... I am even happy that in my town there are some shops where I can get more than the usual D&D miniature board game...
So, ebay and amazon are the only viable solutions...
