Wow, darkseraphim provides as good of a summary of castle Greyhawk's levels as I've seen online.
To me, Castle Greyhawk has always had a sense of being built one or two levels at a time to stay just a step ahead of the players. But, that works well because it fits into the concept of Zagig and his strange, erratic behavior. Not much sense of order, just hobbled-together parts.
Good thread, thanks for fishing that one out, Allan.

I agree with Greyson. Gygax was the ultimate seat of the pants DM. I get the sense that often, he'd have a general idea of the layout and just make up some encounters.

From various articles of Gary Gygax from earlier issues of Dragon magazine I have come to the understanding that the characters in his campaign were in and out of the castle much like a revolving door. As a result, he would create more, they would do more, create more, adventure more. So yes, I agree, that is the impression I received as well. _________________ Eileen of Greyhawk, Prophet of Istus, Messenger of the Gods

IIRC, Gygax gave a very detailed description of the early years of CG in "Founding Greyhawk: The Creation and Development of the GREYHAWK Campaign, 1972-75" in Dragon Annual #2. The article clearly mentions his habit of drawing up levels/encounters during the night for the next days gaming!
I'd be interested to see if darkserpahim could bring all his information together, and thus have it to share (via email if necessary)..?

Hmph. I was trying to figure out why my pages for Black Reservoir didn't show up in google unless you added "greyhawk" as a keyword, and discovered that the pages were just titled with my default title, and not with the actual Black Reservoir title. So, thanks vonbek :D _________________ Allan Grohe
https://www.greyhawkonline.com/grodog/greyhawk.html
https://grodog.blogspot.com/
