Boccob and the Greyhawk Wizard College

For the first time in a long time, i am playing, and after 20 years I have returned to the Wild Coast. I am playing a low level priest of Boccob/Diviner.
My question is this: Is there an affiliation between Boccob and the Greyhawk Wizard College? If so, has anyone ever created an affiliation as per the DMG II or similar?
Also, what is the best source material for this, as I have not played/read about the actual city of GH in years.
All help appreciated.
Thanks,
Anced

Good morning, Anced!
I only know the basics of the Guild, myself, and they can be found in the Oerth Journal #3. It's referred to as; "the least political, secretive, or closed guilds in existence. . . . Founded . . . in the late 4th century CY by the legendary Mard Archmage, Zagig . . . taken over the stewardship of the College of Magic," etc.
Given Boccob's title of "Uncaring," its hard to picture him directly involved with any mortal endeavor. But that's not to say that he isn't. You've given me food for thought and an avenue of inquiry.
Thanks! _________________ Mystic's web page: http://melkot.com/mysticscholar/index.html

Well, as our DM put it last night, just because Boccob doesn't care, doesn't mean his priests don't! heh

From The Adventure Begins, priests of Boccob at the University of Magical Arts create food for the students and staff (Instead of having a kitchen and cooks). Most students worship Boccob.
From the "Gem of the Flanaess: Clerksburg" article in LGJ # 5 say that there are five priests of Boccob as part of the staff, whose primary duty is conjuring food and drink for students not allowed to leave the building.
Best resources for the University would probably be the above sources plus City of Greyhawk, which although it goes into the most detail on the University, doesn't make any mention of priests of Boccob in connection to it, at least none that I saw.

I've never used the affiliations option from PHB II in my campaign but I have used the prestige class, Mage of the Arcane Order from the Complete Arcane to represent members of the Greyhawk Mages guild. It would be easy enough to swap the arcane caster prerequisites for divine... given that you worship the god of magic (and presumably have the magic domain) I don't see why you couldn't have access to the spellpool. _________________ <a href="http://dave.monkeymartian.com/" target="_blank">Menage a Monster</a>: A gamer in the house of monsters

"Greyhawk: The Adventure Begins" THAT'S where I read that information!
Thanks, Smillian. I haven't seen that publication for quite some time. I'll need to acquire myself another copy. _________________ Mystic's web page: http://melkot.com/mysticscholar/index.html

No problem Mystic. I've just managed to acquired all this stuff within the last couple of years since almost everything is available as pdf's now from Paizo. Been reading it so it's all pretty fresh in my mind. Plus I can search by word through the pdf's.

Just been getting "into" Paizo and have been noticing all the PDF's. I need to start "reacquiring" everything myself.
I admit that the "Church" aspect did not immediately come to mind when I first read Anced's question. My first impulse was to consider the possibility of Boccob's personal involvement -- in some way -- which I find unlikely.
But it only stands to reason that the Priest of Boccob would support a Magical Association, or Organization. The LGG declares that most of them are Neutral and they strive to maintain the "balance."
Still, their purpose is to "protect" magic and prevent it from "fading." An alignment with the College of Magic would suit that purpose. _________________ Mystic's web page: http://melkot.com/mysticscholar/index.html

I can also see the Temple of Boccob wanting to keep an (All-Seeing) eye on what's going on inside the University. The priests, in addition to creating food and drink, might also serve as benign spies, funneling news of new spell discoveries or the results of research on recently acquired artifacts back to their superiors at the Temple.
IMC, a priest of Boccob was assigned to a mercenary group in the service of the Grand Druid just so his temple could have insight into some of the secret machinations going on concerning Balance.

I can see that you're really into the "spy" aspect of the game.
Should we ever meet up at a convention, or some such, I'll be sure to keep one eye over my shoulder.

I guess you're right. I blame Dune! But, the Name of the Rose also gives a good idea of the kinds of subterfuge and intrigue that can develop when religious and scholastic interests overlap.

Shade of Paul Atredies! Its jihad!
Loved the first couple of books, once it moved past Paul, I lost most of my interest. Read the books, but wasn't particularly moved by them.
Ah, well. There are always other books to love. _________________ Mystic's web page: http://melkot.com/mysticscholar/index.html

IMC I also play up the divination aspects of his faith. Many famous and popular oracles are devotees of Boccob, serving roles similar to the Greek oracles in the Oeridian and Oerid-Suloise parts of the Flanaess. In my Wild Coast campaign there is a shrine on a hill outside Elredd, called Boccob's Crown, where a famous oracle resides.
