WotC Greyhawk Conspiracy

My conspiracy theory.

EGG releases "The Slayer's Guide to Dragons" on Mongoose Publishing

WotC releases "Draconomicon: The Book of Dragons"

EGG releases "The Slayer's Guide to Undead" on Mongoose Publishing

WotC is soon to release "Liber Mortis: The Book of Undead"

EGG is soon to release "Castle Zagyg" on Troll Lord Games

. . . will WotC release "Return to the Greyhawk Ruins"?

If WotC did release "Greyhawk Ruins" again would you be faithful to EGG's version or WotC's version. Or maybe use both?

I'd buy EGG's version for ideas but, to be honest, I am forced to use WotC's (TSR's) version because I have already made it a part of my campaign.

Good theory. Maybe I need to pay more attention to EGG's new stuff. As for Return to Greyhawk Ruins I haven't heard a shred of rumor about this and I doubt it would generate as much enthusiasm as EGG's version. In fact the place is overdone for my tastes and a Return isn't warranted. The first sets of books mentioned while similar are generic enough in content to at least to be a coincidence. Anyhoo, keep an eye out Baggins. Good stuff.

I think that you are reading to muvch into the coincidence of the releases... IIRC WotC had planned on creating the new draconmicon before Slayer's Guide to Dragons was announced. The new undead book is simply a plan to capitalize on a market that 3rd party publishers have been successful with (not only with Slayer's guide to Undead, but also with AEG's Undead, and several other similar books).

that being said I seriously doubt that a Return to Greyhawk ruins is going to be a reality... although if I am wrong and there is something to your theory I will be happy as a pig in poop.

I agree. I don't believe there is an orchestrated conspiracy. WotC is just in the exact same market as Mongoose, Sword and Sorcery Studios, AEG, et. al.: publishing and selling fantasy game material.

Whose product will I buy? Both. I make WotC's products my base, or standard. And then add from non-WotC material as I see fit.

Okay, I just had to give this thread a bump. I've never been a big fan of conspiracy theories, but this one is just too rich. Is this guy a prophet or what? Wink

It kinda makes me wonder: did Gygax release a new version of the D&D rules recently? Is it his fault we're getting this 4e crap?

Draconomicon was an update/revision of a 2nd edition AD&D bookof the same title, far predating Slayer's Guide.

Libris Mortis was not the first 3rd edition undead sourcebook, Ghostwalk was, it predates EGG's d20 book.

WotC (or more precisely, TSR) had two prior versions of Castle Greyhawk, one serious, one rather not serious.

So if anyone is copying ideas for published works here, it's not WotC...

But, I tend to agree that there is no conspiracy on either side.

Well, if you want to be accurate about things...

It was only a joke. I thought the original post was hilarious, given the recent release of EttRoG.

Nevermind...

Yes, this time your powerful Thread Necromancy is in vain, bubbagump... EGG has been "publishing" Castle Zagyg for 29 years. That really doesn't count. In that time, TSR/WotC has managed to publish it 3 distinctly different times. ;-) And ditto what the Ratman said about the other "coincidences". ;-)

Black-clad WotC ninjas steal EGG's notes and computer data on a regular basis. This is why Castle Zagyg is taking so long. Laughing

IIRC, he did publish a new edition of Legendary Adventures with TLG recently....

Maybe 4e is based on a set notes left as a decoy by EGG for the WotC ninjas to steal...

Saludos!
