I'm thinking about starting an on-line Greyhawk campaign.

Very few people I know seem to be able to spare an evening every few weeks to get together reliably (myself included).

Aside from NWN and NWN2, what are the options available for this?

PbEM or PbP (Play by Post) are two options, but historical experience is you're always waiting for someone longer than you should and the game gets bogged down after a few weeks.

Is there some kind of software available that might fit the trick?

Start an on-line campaign sign-up thread, get people signed up, then start a campaign thread where everyone posts.

You can also use Google Wave. I'm playing in one campaign there and following several other. So far it's been a great experience and now you don't have to check the wave regularly since you get the updates on your GMail account. If you're not into it yet I still have many invites left. Send me a pm if you want one.
