Erypt Map

Recently, there have been a few articles regarding the lands beyond the Flanaess. I am rather interested in this and have been following several of the recent threads here at Canonfire.

Firstly, I really hate the official map of western Oerik but, having said that, it is all we have. I would really love to use the BECMI map of the Known World instead but that isn't what this is about.

Is anyone aware of a fan made, scale map of Erypt that I can get at? This would be a huge bonus as my map making skills leave a lot to be desired ...

Embarassed

I have searched here on Canonfire and Google but alas ...

Thanks in advance!

You and me both. I swear that there was an Erypt fan campaign web page just 2-3 years ago, but I can't find it anymore. I may have even printed some of it off, but there was a period where I printed so much Greyhawk materials, fan modules etc., that I'm not sure I could find it if I tried.

I found...

If you don't want everything to be desert, I found:

http://www.gargaming.com/gazetteer/world-of-oerth

If you're not using the Hollow World, then maybe you could use those maps for Oerth-style Egypt.

I also found this which may be of interest:

Valley of the Kings:

http://www.google.com/imgres?q=Necropolis+map&hl=en&qscrl=1&nord=1&rlz=1T4ADFA_enUS458US458&biw=1280&bih=861&tbm=isch&tbnid=pT0Z0MK1nY3i1M:&imgrefurl=http://www.all-about-egypt.com/valley-of-the-kings-map.html&docid=9lS7aLFI5f4YiM&imgurl=http://www.all-about-egypt.com/image-files/kings-valley-map.jpg&w=641&h=493&ei=7NU7T8LWMYLZiAKt3ZmTDA&zoom=1

EQ (?):

Or maybe just overlay this portion of real life Egypt on the Oerth version:

You might want to check out this thread that I started: http://www.canonfire.com/cf/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=4813

The name and location of "Erypt" come from Francois Marcela Froideval. Gary Gygax approved Froideval's campaign being to the west of the Flanaess.

Here's what I could find on Erypt after I translated it from French to English:

Bluebomber4evr wrote:
Here's Erypt:

Érypt, the kingdom of Pharaoh

The kingdom of Érypt is crossed by the Nile, the big feeder river. At its center is an island where the sacred city of the magi of Érypt is located. This city does not have a name so that no one can find it.

More to the north is Memphis, the capital of the two kingdoms of high and low Érypt. The place ruled by the almighty Pharaoh. Surrounded by gigantic walls, no other city of Érypt is as beautiful, as large nor as richly decorated. Protected by magic canals, the main channel, also called royal canal, leads directly to the palace reserved for the Pharaoh, the Magi and the great nobles. This huge canal is lined with high walls decorated with countless statues and covered by a number of vigilant archers. Immense, magnificent and teeming with people, Memphis finds an equivalent in the superlative degrees only with the capital of Lhynn. The city of the Pharaoh was, however, far more prosperous for many years. And the rich are much richer and the poor have given up their freedom. There are many palanquins advancing slowly on the large esplanade of the palace of the Great Vizier. Memphis has many architectural wonders, most notable are the gigantic pyramids, royal tombs of the preceding Pharaonic dynasties, and the great royal square, so large that it could contain a whole city. The wonders of Memphis stretch out of sight and seem to have no end.

The Kingdom of Érypt was born of the alliance of the Nubian people to share, for a time, with the Tharque Empire with the largest area of the world. Nevertheless, contrary to Atlanteans and Tharques, Érypt knew how to moderate its ascent as well as its fall. Governed by the living God, Pharaoh, the land includes the greatest fighters (the Sphinx Guards) as well as the most powerful mages.

As for a map, I'm pretty sure there was a map here on canonfire. I have no idea who made it, though. I saved it on my computer and can repost it later on when I get home if it's no longer on this site.

Sundered Empire comparison map

I have to say, considering the semi-canon material recently unearthed by Blue Bomber by Froideval, I think that I am going to be making Érypt a little more like that.

But, up until now, I've honestly used the Hamunaptra setting for Érypt. The geography even matches well enough. Even if one were to use an authentic map of real-world Egypt, it's fairly simple. The Red Sea becomes the Gulf of Ra, between mainland Érypt and the island; it just sort of "floods through" to connect to what would be the Mediterranean, forming the long, narrow body of water. The northern and eastern coasts line up well enough to not really have to make any corrections, and it's just in the abrupt end of the land to the south that has to be corrected. Here is a screenshot of a layered map that I have been compiling, which overlays several different maps of continental Oerik.

Obviously, the tiny partial frame in the just south of the Celestial Sea is the Hamunaptra map (identical to Egypt) that I have set in. I know it's not what you're looking for, but, my intent is to show that there doesn't necessarily have to be an entirely different map ... the geography is already pretty spot-on. But, I guess the point is that we're looking for a campaign map that already exists, so that we don't have to make on with new names and such?

I use this map all the time, and I constantly change the layers to have more visible and such. And there's about five layers that cannot be seen in this one.

Wow, thanks everyone!

The point of the exercise for me, would be to build a Gazetteer of Erypt/Khemit, whatever, as I am not sure that anyone has done this for Greyhawk? However, I do have some gripes/concerns ...

... as I am (also) not sure if Oerik (outside the Flanaess) will ever get any "official" loving from WOTC again and I have a fondness for the evocative themes that an Egyptian-like setting evokes.

I hadn't even considered Zakhara, to be honest but I did look in to EGG's D20 Necropolis. Now I can't help but reflect, unhappily, on my situation. Erypt is not Egypt ... Duh! Are Eryptians Bakluni? Do I prefer a Necropolis feel or a more Arabian Nights type feel? The name itself is too close to Earth's Egypt for my tastes ...

@ Icarus, BlueBomber

Thanks for the responses, much appreciated. I have been following the post by Bluebomber and his discussion with Rasgon, rather closely. I find it incredible that these types of finds crop up from time to time.

I have no Chainmail supplements at all, Icarus, so just been reading your posts along with the two previously mentioned above. I think I will investigate Hamunaptra for a bit!

Thanks again guys!

Map of Erypt, Grayhawkonline

Not entirely certain if this is the map for which you are looking, but, I found it right around the corner at GreyhawkOnline.

There is always the chance that I have completed the ritual that made me into an Animus!
Ah, Drax ... ah, Delglath, too! How I envy the time you have stolen from eternity.

Glad that I can do a little kicking around, and find such things. Y'all have had me checking the boards almost hourly with these great threads about Western Oerik.

Alas, my mortality rears its ugly downfalls, and now - I must sleep.

FWIW, the Darlene-style map I'm working on currently touches on the two islands east of Erypt proper, across the Gulf of Ra. I'll be doing Erypt full-on in due course.

Has anyone looked at the three Methraton books to suss out any geographical (or other) information about Erypt? I get that the island is one in the middle of the river in the capital city and is named after the mage, but I've only got book three, and it's in French, und ich kenne nicht Französisch. ;-)

Methraton x3

Thulcondar ...
Yeah, I have all three. I just got almost the whole series about when my Income Tax came in. But, I haven't been able to find a translator. I had one guy talk to me about it, but, after I practically forced him to talk to me about it three times, he never returned my calls.

At any rate ... I guess I could try to muddle through them to see if I can figure out anything specific. My French is poor, but, knowing Ecclesistical Latin as well as Spanish, I can generally get the gist of what's going on, and then, I type any particular passages I'm interested in into a translator.

Anyway... it'd not be soon at best, especially since my GF and I are moving to a new place from Thursday to Saturday. If you give me a timeframe of when you want to publish, that'd be the best bet, so that I have something solid to work with. Hope I can help.

[EDIT: Although ... now that I look back at the third issue ... that's where that part of the story ends, right? Is it just me, or is that a really odd way to end it? ]

BB4E, may I ask where you found that? I recognized one or two lines from the text of the graphic novels, but is there a place online that has all that lovely info already assembled, or did you piece it together from the books themselves?

Thanks,

I got it from a fan-made roleplaying game adaptation. It was all in French and I had to run it through several online translation sites to get in English. There weren't any maps in it, though. :(

Alexandre Clavel

Actually -
I hadn't thought tot mention it, BlueBomber!! Since you mentioned the PDFs, and after the Megaupload.com fiasco, I started corresponding with Alexandre Clavel - author of those PDFs that compile the setting info. It's essentially as you say - just info gathered from the graphic novels. He's unfortunately never translated them into English.

Notably, there are two instances when Gary worked on pseudo-African settings:

1. Khemit, from Dangerous Journeys, and the "Necropolis" adventure.

2. Aesheba, for New Infinities Publishing. Gary acted as executive producer there.

Both books should give more than enough D&D-compatible gaming material.
