Face-Off TV show

Anyone watch this program before? Last season was amazing with the various challenges the contestants had to pull off, which included creature and fantasy-based designs. I was in utter awe what these talented people are able to accomplish in such short time and under great pressure.

The next season is slated to begin very soon. And I intend to watch each and every episode!

Lanthorn,

Me and my wife watch this show. She herself is an artist though its mostly landscapes. She is also very gifted using crafts. If I can get some pictures of her stuff I send you an email of them.

I like shows that focus on creativity. I guess thats why we enjoy role playing games. Wink

Its a good show and I will continue to watch it.

I would much like to see what your wife creates, my friend.

The first season of this show did NOT disappoint. I was enthralled by the amazing ability and talent these people performed. I am sure the second season won't disappoint.

Yeah, the first season had a bada$$ red riding hood, Hanzel and Gretel. A horror version of the Princess and the frog.

Check it out.

I'll have to look that season up.

I will admit that I was 'rooting for' the dude who, ultimately, won the (2nd) season. What absolute talent! I makes me wish I had developed more artistic skills.

I need to PM Illustr8or and Icarus abot this awesome show b/c of their artistic, creative gifts. I think they will really love it (hopefully). My ability to sketch and draw is still fairly rudimentary in comparison; my creativity stems elsewhere, in the written word instead.

~~~~~~Potential Spoiler~~~~~~
Gah! I can't believe that they did that! Well ... yes, I can. I mean, the winner's design was more ambitious, and all ... but, I felt that the other one fit the challenge better! It was to creat a Star Wars cantina character. And the winner's design just didn't really seem like it was a Star Wars character to me.
But, they said specifically that they wanted to award the creativity. Essentially, I think that they didn't want to set the precedent for the very first episode that creativity wouldn't be rewarded. It is, after all, a show to bring new blood into the special effects and makeup field in Hollywood. And I see the point.
But, still!
Happy
Crap. I didn't even think about the time zone difference! I'm *so* sorry! I was trying to couch it in terms that were vague enough that it wouldn't give it away, but still allow discussion! ... and it seems that I failed.
Holy crap. I'm sorry if I said too much. I'll put a "potential spoiler" tag on the post.
Icarus,
I am in complete agreement with your assessment. I feel the same way you do. While the project that was chosen as the winner is ambitious, I feel the runner up had embraced the concept correctly. I know why they rewarded the winning team, but felt the runner up, gave them exactly what they asked for.
OK, I'm back. I guess I can see why you two think the winner may not have captured the 'essence' of the Cantina scene. Both final pairs of contestants did great work! The guys had some wonderful 'out of the box' thinking, which, ultimately, paid off for them (they won, after all). But the gals were 'truer' to the Star Wars character franchise. I'd agree with that statement.
looking forth to more viewing, and discussion, on this topic!
Yeah, the ladies pulled off the character it really matched the Cantina scene. That and the waitress looked like they belonged in the scene. Though I liked the fabrication on the small alien in the exoskeleton suit more then the actual small alien in the suit.
I was wondering if we'd stick with the conversation!
I'll refrain from major commentary until it's aired in your time zone this week, though.
The only thing I will say right now is that I thought that the best and worst of the week were fairly apparent. It's interesting that the middle of the pack wasn't as strong as it was last week. Since they don't have a partner's strengths to work off of, each individual's weaknesses are showing a little more prominently this week.
Icarus,
I agree with your statement. Though I thought the winner this week was chosen correctly. This is not to say that the shells character was not good enough to win. I gave the edge to the judges choice this week.
Icarus, feel free now to let your thoughts fly! Happy
Interestingly enough, and rather oddly to me, I liked more of the designs from yesterday's challenge (Pirate theme) than last week's (Star Wars theme)! There was more detail, both in character design as well as costuming, I thought. The worst ones were pretty evident, as you noted, Icarus, but I didn't think they were nearly as bad as the worst from last week's challenge (I fault that jacka$$ who totally dominated his partner and failed to make it a collaboration). The best were truly inspiring, drawing on the key elements from their personal themes. The color and make-up effects were exceedingly detailed; I especially liked the sea urchin wench, complete with oozing puss or venom (not suprisingly, it won). What I was frustrated about, however, was that the TV show did not allow the 'middle of the pack' to elaborate on their designs, costume choice, and characters...
Argon ... I think that you're absolutely right. The "shells" character was strong enough to have won. There were several stand-out designs, and I think that there was merit to each of them.
I hate to say it, but, it seems that it's going to be that way until mid-season. There's gonna be the best and the worst in clear-cut cases. The first half of the season is going to be about getting rid of the people that aren't going to be strong competitors.
When the girl said (early in the episode), "I'm not good at sketching, so I don't do that, and I write down notes instead.", I just about nearly lost it. Seriously? And you're trying to be a special effects/costume diesigner? I can't figure out how on earth she ended up on that show at that point in her career. Perhaps she'll go on through sheer determination to do some amazing work, but, it's just not this week.
Lanthorn - I think that if I were to have to really think about it, I guess that the ones this week weren't as bad as the worst from last week's challenge, it was just much more clear that there were individuals that weren't able to work so strongly on their own.
The Sea Urchin design was far and away the easy pick for the winner. Although, I will say Roy (The guy with the cowboy hat) is definitely the "idea man" of the whole show. I didn't like his implementation a whole lot (as I wasn't as crazy about the techno-poswer suit last week), but, it's not because I don't think that he doesn't have skills. He's nto quite as strong as others with the prosthetics and paint and makeup, but he's going to go a long way in the competition, I think, simply because he's got the imagination to make movie fx work well. He's the kind of guy that one wants on a design team with technical artists and painters and stuff to back up the ideas that he comes up with.
Icarus, I will defer to you on matters regarding the arts. I am but a crude amateur at best. It is your bread and butter, however. I think you make a good point about the 'note-taking' gal (don't recall her name). Not sure how you can conceptualize designs without even a basic sketch. Maybe she can interpret what she sees in her mind without a drawing on paper...and then translate that onto some other medium? Is that feasible, in your opinion? Also, Icarus, on a sidenote, what media are your specialies?
Furthermore, I would tend to agree with your assessment about Roy... at last the 'idea man' comment. He is surely creative. We'll have to see if he can develop and add to his skill sets.
I gotta admit that, in my mind, even the cruddiest and least talented people on that show are talented, at least compared to your normal, rank and file folk. I am utterly amazed what they can accomplish under such high pressure with limited time. I'd be a deer in headlights if they said, "Here, Jason, take this element and incorporate it into...whatever." Shocked I'd probably be a nervous wreck at best, incontinent at worst (goes back to how too much coffee affects my GI tract!). Confused
Is it just me, or is Glenn pretty darned harsh??? I mean, he's not nearly as rude as, say, Simon Cowell (sp?)...but GEEZ, dude. Maybe I'm just a softie up here living in the Pacific NW, or maybe that's how it happens 'in the real world' where you can rag on someone without regard to their self esteem, but I cannot fathom giving such rough criticism to someone unless they really brought it upon themselves (there are a few, but his adjectives are particularly blunt, without much tact, to pretty much everyone). Maybe that's the intent and design of the show. They need a 'bad cop.'
Overall, though, I think this show is very interesting. I kinda makes me lament not pursuing some other avenues in college...but science just grabbed me at an early age, ALTHOUGH there is A LOT of creativity and artistry in science!!!
Looking forward to next week's episode, and your thoughts, everyone.
I got rid of cable a couple years ago as I found I wasn't watching it and switched over to NetFlix streaming instead. I'm just catching up on 3rd season of Warehouse 13 and still haven't seen Game of Thrones! Sad
I'll have to see if I can watch this show on Netflix. Smile
Crap. I friggin' missed it. My GF was being bonkers about her friggin' new toy. A WiDi (Wireless Display) adapter to play things from her computer directly to the widescreen TV in the bedroom.
Neat device, but, installing it meant that I was busy and not able to watch this week's episode. Crap.
Thanks for the forthcoming tip on a repeat episode, though. I think last week they re-ran the previous episode in the timeslot directly before the new one, so, there's hope for that, too.
What an interesting, bizarre theme: zombies in Neverland! I think the fella (Rob?) who 'missed the mark' should've been the one to go home instead for failing the whole point of the challenge.
Lanthorn,
I disagree he was going or playing on the t-cell virus from Resident evil. I don't think he missed the mark I think the judges missed the concept. Tommy should of went home as only parts of the rabbits head were worthy of the challenge he muffed the punt on the arm and completely missed the mark on the wardrobe. You caan tell it was not even thought of until the last minute.
Nicole deserved to be in the bottom but her only flaw was in applying the paint job which was affected by the air brush malfunctioning. It's easier to determine layering when you air brush then by applying by hand. The boils on Alice's head worked well but were lost in the paint job.
Glenn is harsh but so are producers and movie executives. They don't want to hear excuses they want results. That is the corporate world for you especially in my neck of the woods. Produce or go home, your only as good as your last performance.
They are offering a big prize and money is involved as well as their own reputations. So yeah he has to make sure they hard some tough skin.
About last week's episode (I am waiting to see tonight's) about "Superheroes:"
I think it was great having Kevin Smith as a judge. He definitely added a nice humorous contrast to Glenn's dour persona. At least I thought so.
I don't think that Rod really deviated from his normal style, as Ve instructed him to do so. The cybernetic helmet thing was a bust, I think.
I really liked the make-up and especially the color scheme that Laura (?) did on her heroine with the green highlights. Tommy's burnt dude fell short. She definitely carried that team.
The Alana-Roy team with the devil duo (flaming heroine and greenish gargoyle critter) was good.
The "Indiana Jones" concept was only mediocre.
Looking forward to the pending episode...
Lanthorn,
Kevin Smith was really cool. He offered Jason a job which was cool. Though Tommy should of went home back in the Neverland portion of the contest.
Sara is waning and she was strong in the beginning. Roy is my favorite as he always produces. Alana always needs help so she would not even had finished her hellgirl if not for Roy's help.
I also agree that Roy is a top contender. His ability to fabricate in new and innovative ways is keeping him alive. However, I gotta admit, I really like that Laura gal...not only is she a cute geek (hurray!), but she's got great skill with painting, make-up, and design. My money is on her.
Lanthorn,
Laura is talented, though Roy is my front runner right now! Problem with being a high profile contestant is your placed on a pedestal. Should you fall short one week you tend to get chopped. Which is why I hope Nicole gets another chance.
I was actually running my game last night, so missed the first showing of "Face Off" and had to catch the later rerun. However, given that it was getting late, I saw only half of it. However, what I saw I liked, and glad that Nicole is back in the game.
I agree, Nicole was sent home wrongfully and was able to redeem herself back into the game. Though I thought Sara's character should of been in contention for best character. The Sweetie Thief was executed well. I thought it would be between her and Laura for number 1. Laura won which I won't dispute, but I can't believe Sara was not in the top two looks.
Missed that 2nd half from last week where kids drew the concepts and the contestants created the costumes (dammit!), but I caught the 2nd half of last night's episode with the "Doctor Seuss" theme.
Thoughts?
I was surprised Nicole's character won! I thought it was done well but IMHO Roy's was top. No one else got the emotion he got from his sculpt. Laura's was great the only down side was the fact it did not look enough like a Seus character otherwise it was was second choice and Nicole would of been my third choice. Alan deserved to go home, it was her time. However, shes only twenty years old and has a huge upside, if she can start with a concept and come into her own she could be as talented as Laura or Roy.
Offhand I don't recall my top pick, but I DO agree with Argon that Alana fell flat with her design and concept. Roy, Nicole, and definitely that cute creature, Laura, are my top picks so far. It is getting more and more difficult for me to choose a top favorite thus far...
Laura dodged a bullet last night. Because hers was IMO the worst character last night. I think her past efforts saved her. She needs to step up to where she was otherwise she won't make the final three.
Derek and Nicole really stepped up and Roy put together another solid performance. I was leaning towards Derek's but then I went back and forth between his and Nicole's for the best so if either one of those were chosen then it was fine by me.
I hope they all step up the next two weeks so we can all be impressed with the performance's.
BTW next week they will have a guest from the show Grimm to be a celebrity judge.
I liked the cyborg idea and also agree that Laura stumbled a bit. Derek's design was slightly better I think than Nicole's design, but both were solid creations. Roy continues to be the 'fabricator' whiz.
Yeah, when I saw that Grimm (see associated thread!) would feature in the next challenge, I was QUITE pleased and surprised. Now we have TWO threads that have interwoven each other. How nice is that?! Happy
Last night's episode was really great. I liked all the competitors but have to admit that lately I've been rooting for Laura. I liked the theme ("Grimm" creature) but think that Derek's color choices could've been more vibrant for his raptor beast. I would've also added talons on the hands, more feathers, and perhaps a beak-like face. Roy's snake face kicked a$$ with those detailed scales, but I will agree that the hair just didn't work out well. Nicole's werewolf was truly horrifying, but I wouldn't say all that creative (almost cliche'). As for Laura's bug critter, maybe having the wings on the back would've been a better choice, and a few extra legs to boot. I am glad she won the challenge. Sorry to see Roy go home. He was a strong challenger and a very good guy.
VERY MUCH looking forward to the finale' on Halloween!
Really liked last night's episode and the 'demon/witch' challenge incorporating one of the four elements into the designs. I think all the final contestants are equally matched. I am sorry and disappointed that Roy took out his frustrations for not being one of the finalists out on Nicole and think this is immature on his part. I thought more highly of him until that moment. Confused It will be interesting to see what happens when the results come in from the voting; I was tempted, very much so, but didn't, but think that perhaps I would pick Nicole since her designs seemed more congruent (yes, even the demon, in spite of its ram horns; those teeth were awesome, though!). My money is on her tonight, but all of them are worthy of the title.
til next time,
Nicole!!! Great job, like a phoenix risen from the ashes to claim victory!
I think she totally earned that win.
I very much look forward to the next season starting in January.
Roy,
Did not deserve to go home. Yes he took out some frustration on Nicole though when push came to shove he realized it was not Nicole's fault. Besides it was his critiquing of her design and his fabrication of the demons body that helped push Nicole to victory.
I disagree with the knock on the horn on the demon. The design of the demon / witch was not even close IMO. She knocked it out of the park. Laura's witch was solid but her demon fell off. I felt the same about Derek's design. Great witch sub-par demon. It reminded me of a demon that was done earlier in the same season or last year. In which they criticized the color concept for the creature.
The good news is that the show really had four solid contestants. Anyone of which could of won it in the end.
The one thing that perturbed me on Roy going home, is when he listened to the judges they sent him home. I can't believe Laura won the Grimm challenge. I thought her choice was weak compared to Derek's who should of won the challenge IMO.
I thought Nicole should of went home on that challenge. However, Roy's death knell was not so much the hair as it was the placement of the fangs on the serpent. The hair was bad but not horrible.
The start of the new Face Off season is fast approaching (next week I believe). I am very excited and love this show.
In fact, in my Zoology class, I implemented a 'Face Off' type project choice for my students. As one of the many options available to them, they could fashion, from scratch, 3 face masks representing animals of their choice. The face masks had to be colorful with accurate representations of skin pattern, etc. For instance, a bird should have feathers (and a beak), a reptile scales, mammal fur/hair, etc. I told my students to view "Face Off" to get an idea (some already watch the show).
Two of my students took me up on this option and I was amazed with their artistry! One student (who is very artistic) made a cheetah, pit viper, and thorn insect face mask. The detail and brilliant color was wonderful, and he earned extra credit points. My other student made clay masks (too heavy to really wear) of an iguana, great white shark, and emerald tree boa. She, too, earned extra points for her level of detail and the vibrant paint job. Happy
This just shows me how creative people can be when given the opportunity, even in school, and dispels the myth there's no art in science.
A "Goblin King" design based on a specifically chosen habitat was the theme. I was pretty happy with most of the creature archetypes that were fashioned, primarily the arctic, desert, mountain, and forest concepts. The volcanic and swamp ones were, predictably, poor.
Looking forward to more,
Lanthorn,
I agree with your take on the goblin king challenge. I thought many of the people failed the superhero challenge. My favorite was not the winner I like Dark Gritty especially for DC.
I will reserve my judgment of tonights episode, as I'm well aware you often see the episode after I have viewed it.
The right team won, and Eric is always in second place. I agree the paint job was not good but the demon still looked awesome.
Katie deserved to go home those arm extensions were horrid, though I can't wait for Autumn to go home.
Yes, that design was utterly horrid and looked like a complete botched job.
I liked the idea/twist of an 'ice demon' concept, and personally was very much interested in the identity of each specific demon. Of course, as a gamer, I paid attention to any names that rang a bell. Pazuzu was the only one that seemed semi-familiar to me. Do you recall any of the others?
Abraxas, Chort, and Demus came to mind. Though I thought Pazuzu came off as a decrepit old man in a store rented costume he was the most familar d&d reference.
Demus is sometimes interpreted as an aspect of the hindu goddess Durga.
Chris deserved to win. If House did a better job with the head piece on his fabrication then I would of leaned in that direction.
I'm waiting for Eric F to win a challenge, he's been close so lets see if he comes on strong in the end.
House's design, esp. the stomach "mouth", was cool, but I agree that the head piece was not as strong.
I though it was an interesting concept. Never occurred to me to design a character based on a candy theme.
I didn't really catch next week's challenge, but since it has Brian Singer as a judge, wondering if it pertains to comic charaters, mutants, something along those lines...did you hear what the theme will be?
Argon!!! "Old" friend, good to see your barbarian Avatar once more after so long. I was hoping that you'd surface given that I know you, too, enjoy "Face Off."
Yeah, I like Laura... Happy Sure, she's cute an' all, but she is also highly talented, too. I am glad this show is continuing on, and it seems there's another type of program that follows called "Heroes of CosPlay." Did you likewise watch that?
I've been watching both. Still need to see last weeks episode. Though Roy and Laura are working their creative magic. I still was hoping Eric Fox made it onto the show this year. I think he showed a lot of promise and could easily contend with this group.
Looking forward to tonight's episode featuring Mother Nature concepts. Last season they had a similar challenge with mountains, lava, forest, etc. and it was really neat. Kinda reminds me of some of the kits and branches for druids in the Complete Book of Druids.
Sorry to see poor RJ leave, but I agree his was pretty 'out there' and not in sync with the theme. Sometimes that works out, but he knew he was taking a chance. Sadly, it didn't work this time.
Laura won! I knew that would make you happy. RJ definitely fell short this week. I knew he was going home. He got so focused on what he did the last time. That he could not think about doing it in a different version.
I thought they're were three potential winners and Laura's paint job put her over the top. Lets see what happens next week.
Laura is clearly a very talented person, blending great design with amazing painting skills. Her recent win with her "cubism" painting make-up was nothing short of stellar. She continues to remain my favorite contender.
Lanthorn,
I think Laura has stepped her game up. This season shes hitting on all four cylinders. Her cubism was easily one of the best designs and makeup on the show. It looked like the guy stepped out of a stained glass window.
Lets see what happens next week.
Yeah, I think that she's easily the most talented person on the show (though I really liked Rayce, too, in earlier seasons). I am predicting a showdown between Laura and Tate (who is no slouch in his own right, and is very much a top contender).
Argon, I am beginning to wonder if anyone else besides the two of us are following this show... Wink
I agree with the judges that Daniel's (I think that is his name) creation lacked draconic elements and failed to fulfill the challenge.
I liked the vulture-dragon concept, the Oriental dragon design, and the hulking tar-spewing dragon (which I think won, if memory serves).
Keep posting, Argon, cuz without you it's just a one man monologue! Sad
No Tyler's Vulture inspired frost dragon won. I liked it, but preferred the Tar spewing Dragon that Rashad made. I did not care for the oriental dragon. it was poorly painted IMHO and it was very easy to see where the seams where on the piece. It was also very power ranger-ish IMO as well. Daniel's was tragic. It looked like an Drunken Vietnamese sea creature.
What did you think of the "Shadow Challenge?"
I thought they let the best one be safe. Tyler's was the best IMHO. The Minotaur was fine. I just thought Tyler did an excellent job this week. I don't know the judges seem to be a bit off this season. Though Grahams was pretty good as well.
