However, I think the archeologists have got part of it wrong.

The obvious truth is that ancient tomb robbers disturbed the undead rest of the chief and his bodyguards who rose to battle the intruders. The modern looters were lucky the undead had been destroyed by previous intruders upon their slumber, or we'd now be reading about the mysterious deaths of an archeologist and his students.
