Classic rebellion adventures and missions of exploration. Independent and adventurous, the people of Onnwal are often set upon by oppressors, but are always ready to resist and never held down for long. Charter members of the Iron League, Onnwal in any political configuration, is always a powerful maritime presence. The free state of Onnwal was once fief of the South Province until it revolted and joined in the the creation of the Iron League. Its location on a well-defended peninsula, its vital ports and its shipyards was a major asset to this new alliance. Onnwal is relatively stable with a brisk sea trade and lucrative mines in its western highlands worked by friendly dwarven clans.
In 576 CY, Onnwal, has for over a hundred years been a major power holder amongst the Iron League. Onnwal is interesting in that there are two distinct time periods that are popular for a DM to build a campaign around, basically pre- Greyhawk Wars and post-Greyhawk Wars.
Starting in 586 CY, Onnwal is known simultaneously as the Free State of Onnwal (by the rebel members of the Iron League) and as the Obedient State of Onnwal (by the Scarlet Brotherhood).
Starting in 591 CY the Scarlet Brotherhood's control has shrunk and to only the “strategically located fortress-port of Scant”, the nominal capital, while the remainder of Onnwal is under the control of “Free Onnwal” led by Jian Destron, son of the assassinated former ruler. Jian is aided by Rakehell Chert, the former leader of the Scant Thieves Guild and current leader of the ex-thief guerrillas.
Country specific resources:

Well of All Heals (WGR2) (Rieuwood and Sunndi) from the Treasures of Greyhawk module
The Scarlet Brotherhood by Sean Reynolds
Slavers by Sean Reynolds and Chris Pramas

Adventures in this area include:
- Rebel-minded adventures, pirates, naval battles and other seafaring adventures.
- Incursions of the half-orc Turosh Mak’s humanoid armies from the Pomarj
- Intrigues involving members of the Scarlet Brotherhood
- Interaction with demi-humans in the Iron Hills and Rieuwood Forest
Adventures in nearby areas include:
- Challenging terrains such as in the vast swamp (S1 Tomb of Horrors by Gary Gygax)
- Exploration of mysterious places like the Amedio Jungle (C1 Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan)
- Sea-faring hooks, for example; The Isle of Dread (X1) and Torrents of Dread (Dungeon #114)
Onnwal is a rich area for a new campaign with a framework of published Greyhawk canon, but is easily adaptable for the DM who wants to tell their own story with their players. _________________ Richard Di Ioia (aka Longetalos)
