    Calendars

Calendars mark the passage of years with some defining event. For example the common year (CY) is based on the crowning of the Overking in Rauxes. What is are defining events for the other calendars? I have not found a reference to Suel, Olve, Flan and Baklunish calendars. My curiosity was piqued because unlike some other fantasy worlds, a human empire (the Suel) had sufficient civilization to mark the passage of years even before thier modern elves. And while yes, the original Suel Empire is gone, try telling that to the Scarlet Brotherhood! Does anyone have info? Was it ever printed anywhere?

I don't know if there's any canon on what happened in 1 SD, but the founding of the Suel Imperium would be a good bet.
The reason why the Suel got their calander together before the olve is easily exaplined if you assume that the olve weren't really bothered by such things until they started coming into contact with these humans who seemed to be ever so obsessed by counting the short years of their lives.

1 OR, is in canon, I think, as the year when Johydee freed the Oerids from the dominion of the servants of evil gods.

1 FT - no clue. It's unlikely, given their distribution that all of the Flan tribes and civilisations followed the same system of years. Perhaps it was observed in Tenh, Ehlissa or one of the civilisations bulldozed by the Oerids (and so survived to be recorded by Oerid scribes)?

The Bakluni calander - not sure if that's mentioned in canon either, but the foundation of the First Dynasty of Padishahs is a reasonable assumption. that or some significant religious event.

    Oerth Journal 1

Oerth Journal 1 provides one source that details what gave rise to each of the major cultural calendars. As developed by Steve Wilson, here are some ideas from the article A History of Oerth that can be used as a basis:

Sueloise Dominion (SD), beginning -5515 CY:
1 SD - marked by two events: Obendar's rediscovery of lost grey elven magic and its use to create the Great Binders, which he used to compel each of the genie princes of the North and their king to swear obedience... The use of genii to empower the Suel is considered to be the beginning of the Times of the Suel and the year of Ali Ben Yala's imprisonment is reckoned the first year of the Suell.

Olven Calendar (OC), bginning -4462 CY:
1 OC - corresponds to the year the Four Elven Realms of the East are founded.

Bakluni Hierarcht (BH), beginning -3756 CY:
1 BH - a band of northern nomads, under the leadership of the a Holy Man named El-Baklun-bar-Gash find or construct (it is not clear which) a strange circle of stone, and name it Tovag Baragu. These people call themselves the Baklun and count the discovery of this place as the beginning of the their calendar.

Flan Talley of Years (FT), beginning -2150 CY:
1 FT - marked by the founding of the first Flannae City in the Lortmil Mountains, called Haradaragh,, in eastern Oerik.

Again, this is one person's take, but I think it is a good one.

    Happy gaming.
