I know I've read it, but now I can't find it. What was the hook that got Gygax' characters to go through the tunnel to the other side of Oerth so Gygax could play in Mentzer's Aquaria/New Empyrea world and how'd they get back? I may want to have the same hook ready in my notes.

There was a chute in Castle Greyhawk that led Robilar, Terrik, and Tenser to China on the other side of the world. Aquaria wasn't part of the campaign then, since Frank Mentzer and Gary Gygax hadn't (as far as I know) met yet. I think they met when Mentzer started working for TSR in 1980, after business responsibilities stopped Gygax from continuing to play regularly.

So probably what you want to know about is the chute that led Robilar, Terrik, and Tenser to China. I think the "hook" was "oh, this is interesting, I wonder where this goes?"

I think I remember reading somewhere that the Oeridians come from Aquaria?

I think it's the other way around. The Aquarians came from the Oeridians.
