This spell was posted in my online campaign by a guy who played with gygax and the gang back in the day. He has extensive notes from early campaigns and adventures, and he pulled this out after the party met Melf. He said it never made the cut, so to speak, into the regular rules, but I liked it. I thought I'd post it here, for you guys to see. I think it's a rather cool spell, and a good companion spell to Melf's Minute Meteors.
Melf's Miniature Missile Fireballs (Evocation)
Level: 4
Components: V,S
Range: 10" + 1"/ level
Casting Time: 5 segments
Duration : Instaneous
Saving Throw: None
Area of Effect: 1 or more creatures in a 20' square area, 1 per fireball
Explanation/Description:
Use of the Miniature Missile Fireball spell creates 1 or more fireballs which dart forth from the M-U's fingertip and unerringly strike their target. Each fireball does 1 hit of damage per level of the caster to their target, 1d4 points to those others within a 5' circle. For every 2 levels over the minimum required for the spell, the caster may send out another fireball, which may be aimed at another target, if desired.
It is an excellent idea for a spell, Ragnar. I always approve of slight alterations of canon spells based on elements, etc.
However, I don't think it is very balanced as written. To whit: a Magic-User must be a minimum of 7th level to cast a 4th level spell. The spell, apparently, allows a 7th level caster to fire only a single miniature fireball at a single target doing 7 hit points of damage, plus 1d4 to anyone within 5'. Compared to the 1st level Magic Missile spell, the same 7th level caster could fire 4 such missiles which would deal 8-20 hit points worth of damage. Or, the same 7th level caster could fire off a 4th level Cone of Cold dealing 7-28 points of damage to all within the cone (7d4, IIRC).
I would suggest that the number of missiles the caster is able to fire be increased to be more in line with the spell, Melf's Minute Meteors.
