    Brain Raid

I’ve recently broken out all my old Greyhawk modules.

Since I’m enamored of the motto “3rd ed rules; 1st ed feel.”

I’m considering trying to find a group of like-minded individuals and run the original “Against the Giants”.

Only, to surprise them, I’ll swap the “Drow as unseen masters” out for Illithids.

With their innate powers, Lawful Evil alignment and cowardly natures (not to mention their need for BRAINS!), I think they're better suited for the plot twist.

    Any thoughts?

    (No pun intended)

Have a look at the Living Geoff stuff too. Loads to layers you could add to an Against the Giants campaign.

I'm new to the online Greyhawk stuff:

But I'll take a look around for the Living Geoff info you mentioned.

    Thanks!

I've always loved the Illithids as evil overlords, and Giants make good pawns for them since they generally have low Will saves. The only hitch you might find is that given the Giants' high CR you'll have to use beefed up Mind Flayers if the PC's are going to be challenged after fighting all those Giants (giving them class levels in Sorcerer of Psion depending on which version you're using).

Instead of having the adventure conclude at the Great Fane of Lolth (possibly moving to the Demonweb Pits) you could have it conclude with a fight against the Elder Brain that conceived the plan (possibly moving to face Ilsensine in The Caverns of Thought).

If you have access to it, you may want to look at the Night Below boxed set. The big bad guys in that adventure are Aboleth but they have Mind Flayers working for them and I believe there is a Mind Flayer city that you could use. Also usefull is the Illithiad (I think it has an example of a Mind Flayer Outpost) and of course Lords of Madness (good info. plus stats for Elder Brains, variant Illithids and Illithid pets).

Ask Gargoyle about that, I know that at one point he did the exact same thing.

I was considering giving the Illithids levels in Psonic classes so I'll certainly go with that idea now.

Someone else posted this idea already?

    Sorry about the repeat then.

But I suppose (being the new guy) it's unavoidable.

    Thanks for the input!

I believe what chaoticprime was saying is that Gargoyle has already done something like this in a game before.

For my part, if you really want to spice up a return to GDQ you might try weaving it and Night Below together. It takes some work, but it is a real hoot - they blend quite nicely.
