Future City of Greyhawk Map - Interest Level

The recent post of the City of Greyhawk map has made me interested in doing one for my campaign. The difference in my campaign is that it is set far in the future of Greyhawk. Its not space age or any silly thing like that though. Anyway, I was thinking of doing an updated map where the city expands and is even bigger.

If I do such a thing, is there any interest here in me sharing it with whomever wants it?

If you are wondering what kind of mapper I am, check the following links to some threads featuring my maps over at Cartographers Guild.

This is for a city map I started but didn't finish due to the campaign wondering off in a WILDLY different direction.

    http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?6087-Dragongate-Map

This is for my Prize Winning map of Opal Island - of which, I am the most proud. This is also the style I would likely emulate in an expanded 'hawk map.

    http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?5439-The-City-of-Opal-Island

Another link to a partially completed map for a small mountain village.

    http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?5977-Town-Village-Ft.-Lusitern

This is a map of the nation of Isengrim, one of the world powers in my Homebrew.

    http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?5967-National-Road-Map-Isengrim

This link takes you to a thread featuring several other maps from my homebrew.

    http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?5407-Maps-from-my-Homebrew-DnD-Game

As you can see, I don't post too frequently on there these days, but I still do tons of mapping and campaign work. I would love to be able to put my entire stock of homebrew stuff on-line for anyone's use that wants it - but I haven't figured out how to do that cheaply and effectively yet.

Anyway, let me know if you are interested.

Holy hell, Katerek! Nice work! Are you kidding me? Yes canonfire can use your mapping talent. From your samples I'd wager that you could find projects with Oerth Journal as well if the right people see your work. Anyhoo, in the short run, I think a future GH city map is a wonderful 'alternate timeline' idea. I myself have done the Flooded Flanaess map in a similar vein. There would definitely be a good audience for this map. Might you be able to do layers so that you could see GH's growth in 'time' increments?

Well, its definitely something I am going to do, I was really just curious about the interest in sharing.

As for other maps - I am available, interested, and cheap (i.e. mostly free). But, I have to be interested. I am still at that stage where my motivation to do something is commiserate to its usefulness in my campaign.

For this, what I intend to do is most likely start with Dennis Tetreault's map and work from there. At very least draw inspiration from it. I work solely in Photoshop CS (version whatever), so the layers thing is natural. When I post them, I will post them most likely to the cartographers guild and then just reference them with a link here. Or maybe do a rapidshare account or somesuch. I don't know yet, but rest assured it will be free and easy to borrow.

Others, feel free to post comments and ideas.[/i]

The last iteration of Dennis Tetreault's map (from LGJ #2) is the Greyhawk City map in "Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk [WTC10925]". Look at:

I started this over the weekend. I have the base map and some of the walls done. I am trying to find a good place to post work in progress pics. I was originally going to use Cartographer's Guild, but since I am technically working from someone else's IP without permission, I don't know if that would be kosher. Any ideas?

Unfortunately, not being a member of the "Cartographers" site I apparently can't view your maps. Sad

Ah, well. I'm happy to take everyone's word for it. Evil Grin

Then I will definitely find a neutral place to host them. Any recommendations?

Too computer and internet "illiterate" to offer any suggestions, but thanks for the thought! Wink Laughing

My brother Jay (Katerek) will be in the hospital for awhile (weeks). He had just recovered from one abdominal surgery when early this morning his appendix decided to rupture. His first surgery now has to be redone, on top of the appendix removal.

I'll let you all know what's going on.

    Sorry to hear that. Sad

Please give Jay my best wishes. And know that my prayers are with you in these continued family troubles you face.

Well I am out of the hospital and on the road to full recovery. Just now really getting back into the swing of things. Since I am now largely void of any 'disposable' organs I should be okay for a while. I tell ya - two major surgeries in less than 4 weeks time takes it out of a guy.

Anywho - I plan to get back on this map pretty soon. I still haven't found a good option to host it, but I will once it gets to a point where I am ready to start sharing WiP pics.

right now all I have is a real basic geographic layer, the walls of the city (with future expansions), and the beginnings of a road's layer.

Glad to hear that you're almost back to "fighting form," Katerek. Happy

Look forward to seeing the finished project. Cool

Hey Katerek... sounds like you have an interesting project underway! Sorry I haven't had a chance to jump into the conversation earlier. Things have been kinda... crazy... around here. If you have any questions about my map, feel free to ask away.

    A couple of quick bits-o-info.

There have indeed been two versions of my CoG map published. My original map was published as the poster map included with Living Greyhawk Journal #2. The small version that is on my website is the exact same map with the map tags (labels) removed (they wouldn't show at that scale anyways, hence my javascript popups). The second version was published within "Expedition to Greyhawk Ruins" (as rol-oeste mentioned). However, that particular map is an EXACT trace of my original map (right down to every last tree and fence post!! - without any credit to me, I must add). It does not add a single bit of new material. Not one building or tree. So if you have the original poster map, you've already got everything that you need (and at larger scale).

The other thing I'd add is that if you read my description of the undercity map on my website, it describes a section to the west of the city where Zagig has already created the sewers for the City of Greyhawk's next great Quarter expansion (somehow he knows what the CoG's future looks like!). It was always my intention to eventually produce an expanded City of Greyhawk map for the decades to follow. Those sewers might be helpful to you in helping to plan your own Future-'Hawk.

Lastly, since I'd like to continue building Maldin's Greyhawk as "Your City of Greyhawk go-to place-on-the-web", I'd be happy to offer to host your FutureHawk on my website as a separate page connected to my City of Greyhawk subsection. The same goes for any other Greyhawk DMs who would like to create CoG materials. Just as I have been trying to do with the Irongate Project community site - I have hosted several articles there created by others (and would love to have more Irongate submissions!).

    Hey Maldin

I am VERY familiar with your site. I have been visiting it off and on since the old GreyTalk days. In fact, I have referenced your work in my campaign so often that most of my players take your Codex work as canon.

I will take you up on the hosting offer - that is very kind of you. I haven't made too much progress - well, I have, but due to a photoshop crash I lost a bunch of it and have to do over.

I am still tweaking with wall lay outs. I want to expand the city wall to encompass the western expansion and some areas north and east but I don't know if I like what I have done with it yet. I am also wanting to bridge the Selintan but I cant seem to make the bridge look right. I have drawn and redrawn it a couple of times.

I will keep you posted on how it turns out, and when it comes time we can work out any particulars necessary to host it.
