Illithids typically communicate through psychic means. They project thoughts and feelings to each other in a way non-illithids can scarcely comprehend. When they do feel the need to write, illithids do so in qualith. Instead of typical alphabet-based writing, illithids write in qualith by making marks consisting of four broken lines. They use each tentacle to feel the breaks in the lines, making it basically similar to braille. However, qualith is extremely complex, as each line modifies the preceding lines through explaining abstract concepts associated with the above words in ways no human can understand; only by understanding all four lines simultaneously can the meaning be understood properly.
I was looking for qualith script last night, but I cannot find any...so, I made some!
According to ghwiki, it seems not to be alphabet-based. However, I just want to make my players impressed LoL.

Actually, I'm pretty sure there's a few examples of qualith in The Illithiad, used for the names of each of the various creeds.

I checked the book and it's quite similar to what I imaged.
Now I'm thinking about improving my font. Making some letters connected to each other, then it would not show the gaps between them.
This sort of does look a bit like braille ... but, it reminds me more of the individual characters of the I Ching. ... this is really kind of cool, and would allow players to have a visual of the actual writing. I kind of interpret the languge to be a little less like a straightforward alphabet, but, this will do superbly for our purposes in RPG gaming ... I don't know how I missed it the first time, but, I just downloaded the True Type Font from the link above!
I immediately was writing in MS Onenote with it, and it ROCKS! It really does look like a rather good facsimile of Qualith. Especially if it's written in long single lines. It makes a nice "ribbon" so to speak.
I went looking for examples in [9569] Monstrous Arcana - The Illithiad (TSR9569). And it looks great, comparably speaking. I love it, and I certainly wouldn't nitpick. I'm *so* using it. There's a bit more space between "letters" than Qualith would have since it's more conceptual than other languages. I can see the tech-savvy illithids designing a machine to print this script. With levers, and buttons, and dials, and a hatch you can get inside if you need to fix it, and claw-like arms to feed paper into the apparatus.
