A little or a lot of thread necromancy

I didnt participate in canonfire till recently and have been turning my eyes toward posts and articles from yesteryear.

While the pages in this heading appear to be 80 in number nothing asppears to be available from pages 72-80. Also links in the first article I looked into on page 71 "Ket vs Valuna" are dead.

NOTE:

More dead links from page 71 though it is unsurprising that links in posts from 2003 lead only to emptiness or sorrow.

I am not sure why the topics on pages 72-80 of the General Discussion forum do not appear, but I do know why the links in the topic "Ket vs Valuna" on page 71 do not work. A number of years ago, Gary changed the page address format on the site, but links do not auto-update to take that into account. Here is an example of what the problem is.

Old links that have not been updated will look like this:

http://www.canonfire.com/cfhtml/modules.php?name=Forums

...and will lead to the message:

"The Sages are at Work

Derro are loose in the system and the Canonfire! Page You Have Selected Seems to be Unavailable...

We're working on the problem and will try to restore it as soon as possible.

-The Editors (editors -at- canonfire.com)"

The updated format looks like this:

http://www.canonfire.com/cf/modules.php?name=Forums

...and will actually work.

So, the solution is to just delete the "html" portion of any old link, and the link should then work.

Malfunctioning links

I've come across it several times when trying to go through old thread; specifically in long threads.

When the numbered "more pages" links don't connect to the correct places.

Just checked for myself; I have a join date of January 2002 and my first article submission in March of 2002.

But my first forum post is in May of 2004.

I have no recollection of the posts in question, but I can't believe that I would have been a member and article submitter for two years without making a forum post.

Also, if I "view my profile" and click on "view all posts by Kirt" it lists 28 pages of results. But if I click on anything besides page 1, it says "No topics or posts met your search criteria". And page 2 includes posts from 2019!

Looks like Occam's Razor provides the easiest explanation:

There were no forums on Canonfire! in the first couple years of the site. They were a later addition after an upgrade. Greytalk was still the primary discussion venue during that time.

So it doesn't appear we have lost any content, save for the greytalk archives (1993+) which still have not been restored anywhere.
