I'm working on a new campaign set in the Cairn Hills, and I'm curious as to other's thoughts on the region. Also, I'm curious as to all canon references to the Cairns; I have almost all Greyhawk sourcebooks and adventures, but I know there are folks on here that know more than I do. I know the Star Cairns, the Crypt of Lyzandred and the Doomgrinder are set here, as is the early part of the Age of Worms in Dungeon magazine. I'm just looking for other canon and/or ideas. Thanks in advance.
Oh, and before someone suggests it, I already went through the Greyhawk Module Location Index to find references (most of which I do have). Still looking around, though...
The Age of Worms Adventure path, as you probably know, starts off in the Cairn Hills - Diamond Lake to be exact. Haven't read any of it, but there's probably some juicy morsels of information there that'd be worth hoovering up.
Gargoyle, what year shall your campaign begin? One consideration is the breadth of Greyhawk City's influence at different times. How much control do you want the city to exert on the Cairn Hills
Also, while The Whispering Cairn adventure from Age of Worms provides enormous detail of Diamond Lake, there are still the towns of Steaming Springs and Blackstone if you want to tailor your own towns as a home base of sorts. _________________ Don (Greyson)
I'm thinking current year. Mainly, I'm looking for something to tie everything together. I have an idea that revolves around an escaped Horned Society Heierarch (sp?) seeking to raise an undead (or other) army to retake the Horned Society (or possibly somewhere else, maybe even Greyhawk itself). I have the Age of Worms material, although some of that doesn't fit with my established version of things (I've been running WoG since '89, and have my own versions of past events; the battle on the Plains of Pesh took place in the Sheldomar Valley, for instance). As I say, I'm also curious as to what other DM's have done in their campaigns with the Cairn Hills. For instance, what/who was the ancient race that created the original cairns? How long ago? How many are as yet undiscovered? And so on...
The various adventuring locales from The Adventure Begins (Vale of the Lamia, etc.) would be close, as well as the ruins of Castle Greyhawk and Maure Castle.

Now an idea I had for the Cairnbuilders was something truly alien, something like you'd expect out of Call of Cthulhu (which could fit very well in WoG). And I found a great resource in the Scarred Lands books from Sword & Sorcery - the Slarecians. The story on the Slarecians is that long ago there was a disembodied sentience that became trapped in the world when the planet was created. This splintered the sentience into various fragments, each with its own distinct personality. These entities sought a way to romve themselves from the pain of form they were in. To this end, they created beings of spirit encased in crystaline flesh - the Slarecians - to do their work on the world, which is the ultimate destruction of the planet that is prison to their masters. Imagine if the Cairns were originally part of an underground complex of these ancient Slarecians dedicated to destroying Oerth? Other things, like the Doomgrinder could be linked to them as well. Other ruins, maybe even many of the tunnels of the Underdark as well. Tharizdun could be made one of the original masters (uthriarchs, as they were called) - after all, in the original material, the Slarecians have a connection with darkness, and one of their uthriarchs is a master of darkness and madness. Just to give some fodder of where my mind is heading with this thread/campaign...
