Well - the Taliban were one of many factions for a long time after the fall of the Communist government They managed to gain power and marginalise the other warlords. Even then the Northern Alliance (a fairly anarchic grouping led by Massood) led a significant resistance against them in the Panjir Valley and elsewhere. Since then, the other warlords have reasserted themselves in their home regions.
It could be similar with the Madhdites - they have the upper hand in 645, but are resented and in some places openly resisted by Ulli warlords (kind of an Ulli Northern Alliance) and Yorodhi clans (who merrily make war on Ulli and Mahdhite alike).
All in all an interesting place to be (as always). :)
