I had one group of players that actually travelled with Myles Tattletale, a hobniz bard NPC for about six months. Every land that the group travelled into, the bard would have a legend or two about. He would lead the group into seemingly futile adventures that ended up having nothing to do with the original reason the group got involved in the first place.
Myles was a perfect front for spreading false rumors and history. All the while, Myles lived high on the hog at the expense of the players. As it turned out, only two of his "legends" were ever accurate. It was the searching for legends that made the game interesting.
I also use a lot of mis-information. My players have encountered literally dozens of different maps of the Tomb of Horrors and White Plume Mountain. The more maps they buy that look different from the others, they less they are prepared for what will occur. 8-)
